Nice job with the off camera flash work. I find the bridge overhead a little distracting but I'm sure it played a significant role in how the lighting appeared.
I like it!

It's a very good picture.
To be picky, I hate to say it, but it looks like you have too much separation. You needed one more light to light the dark corner of the bridge, to give it something, maybe a gray cast or something, very low power. You could have even bounced some light in from Camera Right probably.

ah true, i think i see what you mean. like putting a light on the rocks in the background would bring out those details and give separation at the same time. thanks.

Lighting should look as natural as possible. This doesn't!
It looks too contrasty for a portrait and is also more contrasty than it would have been without the flash.
Flash would have been more appropriate had it been used with diffusion. For example, reflected using a parasol reflector.

not being rude, but my lighting info is up on flickr. main light was a sb 28 into a reflective umbrella over his head and right. one bare sb28 behind and left and one vivitar 285 to the right. the lighting isn't supposed to look natural, the contrast comes from the balance between ambient and flash. no flash would have blown the background completely out, its under a bridge.
i do appreciate the input. but this was just a fun shoot.

I think the darkness behind the subject is what makes the underside of the bridge distracting for me. I agree lighting the rocks and bringing the exposure of the underside of the bridge up a little will help balance the image's lighting.
I don't mind contrasty portraits, it gives it an edgey feel which fits with the subject and location. The colour & exposure of the water & trees is really quite stunning, balance out the rock & bridge exposure and I you'll have a powerful image.
Do you plan to re-shoot this, or even editing the rock exposure? It would be interesting to see the difference.

not really, my shoot was called off cause the drummer for the band couldn't make it, so we were just messing around. i'm pretty happy with the way it came out, some things just can't be helped. perfectly exposing the background and underneath the bridge would be so tough.
