its not much of a portrait, look like a snapshot, the most distracting thing not making it a portrait is the half face of the adult.
if you crop that out the lighting is good ont he face so you got that going for you

i will get around to posting them.
like i said the lighting is good but as far as it being a portrait as the original poster said it lacks in that departement. especialy the face cut in half.

Very cute child, and i like the lighting. I agree that the adult face needs to be cropped out, but other than that good job.

Great lighting! Go ahead and crop out the adult and you got a great portrait! Is that natural light or a strobe light/flash??

Here's my CC take for what its worth.
The picture does look more like a snapshot than a portrait, I agree the adult's face needs to be cropped out but beyond that, typically you want some sort of connection with the subject - typically you want that eye contact. You did get come great light and catchlights in the subjects eyes so good job there.
There is also a red hue on his face probably from his shirt - this could be photoshopped to help get rid of it.
One last minor detail is the background, I like the natural setting and you got good bokeh but the way the white/green intersection cuts right in the middle of your subjects head is distracting. Ideally you want to pay attention to the background and shoot from another angle or something to minimize things like this.
Hope that helps!!

Thanks all for the comments. I didn't use any flash/strobe, but did use a white sheet as a reflector on the bottom left. Rest natural light.
True, this fails to be a proper portrait due to the presence of the adult half-face. However, I should have mentioned, I titled this image "Protective", and I feel it becomes pretty appropriate from then on. Of course, opinions are welcome on this point as well.
For those who said its a just like a snapshot, I'd like to know why the shot becomes a snapshot? Maybe then I could avoid it next time :)
All comments much appreciated. :) Thanks everyone
