Just ran across this forum and it seems great! I've been snapping pictures and taking videos like a mad man ever since I got my T1i a couple days ago. Bear with me as this is my first dSLR I previously had a Point & Shoot!

Very, very awesome! I am interested in doing some timelapse HD video, but I wondered if I even need the resolution of the 5DMKII for this?? I guess you need to end up with 1920x1080, which my 30D could do.

For me, this depends on (1) how much time I have for the scene and (2) how much light for contrast there is.

When I shoot bird videos, I sometimes focus using the AF function on something close. The AF on my 5DII is no where near as fast as my XH A1, so I have to be ready by focusing on a spot where I think a bird will land ahead of time.

In many cases(bird shots or otherwise), unlike my XH A1, I focus the 5DII manually. This actually works pretty well because the view screen is very accurate and I use the 5DII for subjects that don't move a lot...giving me more time to focus.

Auto focus(if the scene is pretty contrasty) on the 5DII works well but is slow....2 - 3 seconds or more I would guess.

:)

westernminnguy
22nd of June 2009 (Mon), 17:37
what lens is everyone shooting with on the t1i?

Boosted...If I may....

The lens used may not be the important part.

All my Canon lenses behave(in video mode) on my 5DMKII just as they do on my 5DMKII in still mode...only they provide me with the same image in video....cool huh?

The lens you use just depends on what kind of shot you want to get and what works with the camera in still mode.

Thought I would post this here as well
Shot this for my buddy Kesler about 2 weeks ago with the 5D mark II.
Fun shoot with a great team and great model.

Shooting with the 5D is fun but I need to add some upgrades to the camera if I'm going to shoot more video. I really need a good loupe to check exposures and a much better tripod to stabilize the shots. Most of the wider shots are done with a 24-105 and the tighter shots with the 200mm.

Enjoy! (make sure to watch in HD!)

I have a Bogen 501 fluid head. not the best but it does the job. I just used the on camera mic. I've experimented with a shotgun mic but the audio was terrible; really low and noisy.

Well, it's not much but here's a 45" clip (http://www.phototone.org/ants.mp4). I mounted the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 macro lens on the 5Dii and shot it at f/16, but at 4x magnification the depth of field is still pretty small. In this clip, several ants have captured another ant and are proceeding to do unpleasant things, including ripping off one of its legs. Scaled down to 30fps 720p with no audio.

Short video demonstrating shallow DOF and selective focus with the T1i and Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens wide open. First part showing T1i configuration shot with Canon HF100. Hoodloupe 3.0 and red rubber band since replaced with the CAVISION viewfinder assembly designed for the 5D MkII (wish I could afford that one).

Then a night shooting test series. Testing short dramatic scene concepts with T1i, 50mm f1.8 Nikkor lens (mostly stopped down to f2.8 for darker "mood" look), Hoodloupe 3.0 held on with rubber band, and everything mounted on SpiderBrace for stability hand held.

in saying that... in this situation it'd be easier just to close down the aperture and get more depth of field rather than fine tuning your focus every time he moves his head.

I used Adobe Premiere Pro to clip together and edit sound. I used Adobe After Effects to do the special effects and color correction. I still need to use them more to get the hang of it.. but I love having my knowledge of photoshop directly transferable to some things in AE. I'm glad you liked it.

You don't HAVE to use older manual Nikkor lenses on the T1i to do this, there is a way with Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Faster primes will give best shallow DOF selective focus, I used the Canon EF 50mm F1.8 available for about $100 or so.

Here is how it's done:

I wanted to test the depth of field of the Zeiss 85mm f:1.4 Planar T lens on the EOS mount on a 5D Mark II.
Here's a somewhat ridiculous impromptu camera test called "Beefaroni Skater" from the weekend, shot mostly at f1.8.

Here's a vid I shot a week ago w/ my friend's T1i w/ kit lens. no exposure control of any kind made it more difficult, especially when I had to shoot and direct at the same time. Shot it in about 1 hr w/ bunch of takes to get different angles. isn't a great vid but here it is.

enjoy.

A monopod helps a lot, you don't even need to have it extended. A grip also helps stabilize the camera a little bit. Stick a couple pounds of weight on the bottom of the monopod and you got yourself a cheap steadycam.

Hello,

I am putting together a short film/travelogue based on footage I shot during my recent 5 day Kuari Pass trek in Uttaranchal, India. Here is a 3 minute trailer of sorts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQn76jBaAkQ

Feel free to comment after watching. Full trip report, movie and photographs will be up on my website soon.

Equipment used: Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 100mm Macro, Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS, Canon 17-40L. Most of the footage was shot hand-held. Where possible, I would have used a Benro m268 Travel Angel tripod. Premiere CS4 was used for putting together the footage.

Hey everybody,

what you see here is one of my first videos shot with my new 5D Mark 2 back in summer last year.

I went on a road trip with a friend of mine and San Francisco was just on of our stopovers.
Since we were on that road trip we didn't had any time to spend while stopping at different locations and cities.

The video has no concept at all. It's shaky and the lighting sucks pretty much. We drove more than 5500 miles but we still had so much fun doing all this.

Anyway I'd like to hear your suggestions, comments and thoughts on that video.

Shot this past weekend just outside New Orleans. I was hoping to see more alligators but it's winter and the sun was going down so there weren't many out. Saw a lot of beautiful scenery though and the 5D Mark II captured it perfectly. I shot most of it with the 70-200 hand held with only a Zacuto Z finder pressed up against my face for stability. The footage is surprisingly smooth considering it was all hand held with a long lens on a moving airboat!
