I have finally got round to installing the disc that came with my G9 and as there was no manual in the box with the camera I assumed the there would be a digital manual embedded on the disc.
I was wrong, or at least I think I am.
What I found was notes telling me what the camera could do rather than how to do it.
As a novice to manual settings (I’m an ‘Auto’ sort of guy) I am stumped with what was there.
Is there a set of clear step by step instructions to be found somewhere?

Cheers.

You may be able to download the PDF version of the User Guide from Canon at this link (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=321&modelid=15669). You may also be interested in a commercial PDF short course for the G9 from here (http://www.shortcourses.com/store/canon-g9.html). The commercial product may also be ordered in a spiral bound, black & white printed version, or you can get both. I have both, but the PDF version is full color and interactive, somewhat.

I have the pdf version of the short course- it's not bad - very good for a novice to the G9 and a lot better than the Canon manual

... a lot better than the Canon manual

that's not saying much

the canon manual that came with the g10 i just got, is one of the worst manuals i've ever seen.

i'm accustomed to nikon DSLR manuals, and they are excellent.

maybe the ones for the canon DSLRs are as good,
but then the ones they author for the point & shoot users are dumbed down deliberately,
with the idea that a p&s user wouldn't understand a proper manual.

i don't know.
the camera seems pretty good, so far,
... but the user's guide is clumsy, inarticulate, unorganized, superficial, illogical, and nearly useless.

i am wondering if spending the $20 on the shortcourse pdf would give me much more, or if it's just a $20 donation to the shortcourse authors.
http://www.shortcourses.com/store/canon-g10.html
from the table of contents, it doesn't appear to be much more in depth, than the pile canon provided.
the bulk of it seems to be non-g10-specific digital photography basics,
... and then the g10 specific topics, each get one page or less.

i'd be happy to pay for a thorough user's guide, but one would think that spending $500 on a kodak would warrant a carefully crafted, complete manual.

(too bad thom hogan only writes guides for nikons)
