hehe thanks peeps :D
truth to be told its what happens when you do this kinda crap instead of learning for school or so xD. but personally it brought me a huge amount of happiness and personal acomplishment than school ever did. and thanks to my portfolio i got accepted into a university where i start in fall, in digital film and animation :D
damm, now i need a 5d mk II :P

hehe cheers mate :D

Well its a long process and there are very many different techniques.
I start off by making a large res planet texture. This is usually a combination of stock photos of textures i took (marble, gravel, rust etc,) and googl eearth sahara desert images.
I blend them together using the clone brush.
Then i brush in some custom details like rivers, mountainranges and oceans.
Then selective colouring usind different layers on different styles ( i prefer soft light and overlay for colouring the texture)

Then i port the texture ( around 9000x9000 pixels or more) into cinema 4d where i apply it to a sphere and render the base.
Then its back to photoshop to add the atmosphere, create the lighting, and maybe even some clouds if the planet calls for it.

This first step usually takes 3+ hours but can be more or less depeneding on the scope of the project.

Nebulas are a combination of manual brushing and texturing aswell.
Starfields a manipulation of noise, textures and manual brushing aswell.

There are many great guides on how to get started in spaceart on Deviantart but i'd avoid those that tell you how to do it pixel by pixel, those leave you no freedom to develop your own technique.

I use CS3 but any photoshop is good from PS7 upwards.
Never heard of avery though, will have to look into it, but PS is magnificently capable of everything you coulf need :D, it just takes a while to really get to know all the functions and how they can interact with each other

Sorry for the wall of text :D

Do you use a tablet? If so, what kind? I've always been a big scifi fan and really like your artwork.

@Birdman: Yep i have a Wacom Intuous 3 A5 Wide :D, love it to bits
@Mike: CS3 is the PS version i have, Adobe Photoshop Creative suite 3, My PC is:

Quad core 3.2 GHZ Intel, 4GB DDR2 Ram, 2x 500 GB Internal HD ( also 2x 1 TB external HD's) and the GFX card is NVidida 9600 GT

I guess i could do spaceart in traditional art but i wouldnt be able to get teh detailing, colour and definition i can get in digital, also considering my finished project files can get up to 6000x3500 pixels big ( great for printing large).
I also use Cinema 4D for my 3d work wich i implement in the sci fi. Even finished a quicky 3d only project a few days ago ( well half done tbh):
