How would I know if I need the firmware update for my 20D? I got mine 20D last month.

A quick read through the manual would give you the answer, but since you already asked:
Turn the camera on, press the Menu button, scroll down till you see what version you have. If it says 2.0.0 then you have the latest. If you have 1.1.0 (I think that's it) you have the one before this last one and you don't really need the update (IMO) since all you'd be getting is support for the wireless adaptor.
Edit: I see you got the camera last month. You most likely have the second version I talked about.

I received an email from canon.ca last week advising me about the latest software upgrade for the 20D, version 2.0.0. If I remember correctly I got similar emails regarding software updates for my D60.
I assume that everybody who registers their 20D when they purchase it gets this kind of reminder.

I registered with Canon Australia and never got an email when 2.0 was released. I'm holding off on the upgrade until after my first wedding in a month, because right now my camera works perfectly on the 1.1 firmware.

Thanks.
I haven't read the whole manual yet. I have been very busy.
What is the support for the wireless adaptor?

If you have firmware before 2.0, then the camera will not work with the wireless adapter. If you have firmware 2.0 or later, then the camera will work with the wireless adapter.
If you don't have the wireless adapter, then it does not matter. Most of us feel that the wireless adapter is pretty highly priced anyway.

If you're nice, Bob also gives away free wireless adapters.
I just upgraded to 2.0.0 2 days ago, and haven't had a hitch in the last 2 days of shooting almost 2000 images.

If you do not have a firmware file for your 20D, it would be a good idea to grab this one and save it. That way if a future upgrade breaks something on your camera you would have this one to go back to. And believe me, Canon upgrades can very well break things. (Hopefully, the 20D can "upgrade" to a previous version like other Canon cameras can.)

This leads me to the question, is there anywhere old firmware is archived and can be downloaded? I presently have 1.05 in my 20D and have had no problems. I'd like to have a copy of 1.05 in the event it gets hosed somehow. Yeah, I know I should "trust" the latest version out there....

Not that I know of, but you can start your own unofficial archive. If you want 1.10, I'll be happy to send it to you.

Thanks Leo !!! I shall be forever indebted to you !! :D
Interesting, I tried to open the /dc/ folder location and got a message that I don't have permission to access this server. Yet the file downloaded fine. Internet magic...
Thanks,
