I love the shot! Maybe soften the skin on mom a little to get rid of the red blotched?

cute!

any tips (anyone here can comment!) on how to achieve that nice consistent black background without making the texture of the backdrop visible??

I'm planning to attempt something similiar in a few months time when my neice is born.

After taking a picture on a black background, you can actually make the background more black by adjusting your curves or levels. you just have to be careful when this is done. Any extra you need after that you can do by using the burn tool.

cute shot, i think the skin tones are a bit too pink which was already pointed out, and also i think they eyes need to be brought out just a tiny bit, they almost seem too dark and dull. I did a quick play with the pic if you dont mind. I also barely adjusted the curves and did slight skin smoothing.

Why not get it correct in camera? Yes, using the curve tool will darken your black background, but it will also darken all the shadows and blacks on your subject.

well trying to achieve this correctly in camera is what i do, but i wasnt sure if they were wanting to know how to make it more black during the shoot, or in PP, because a lot of people struggle with this in camera. However, in order to keep the black background really black without any visible texture, you either need to lower the aperature and/or keep the subject pretty far away from the background and of course it will also matter how you have your lighting set up as to which or both that you do. On another note, if you know about masks and such in Photoshop, you can use the curves tool without darkening all the shadows and blacks on your subject. Its all a matter of knowing how to do it correctly.
