View Full Version : Please give me some help Flash Bracket (Delta is junk)

My favorite form of photography has become a task instead of fun. :( I use an XSI with a Delta Flip Bracket, 430ex, and Lumiquest softbox. For a few weeks the Delta was great. I could put the flash in almost any position I needed. Now the arm will not stay put no matter where I put it. I even tried resting the edge of the Lumiquest on the lens but, every time I moved just a little the arm would flop out of place. I have been shooting with just the flash and Lumiquest mounted on the camera but, I can't get the angles or exposure "just right". Does anyone know of a good bracket that will allow me to again concentrate on composition and lighting rather than "how can I keep the bracket from flopping around like a fish out of water"? I have reviewed the "Show your Macro Rig" thread and see some interesting set ups. Just want to make sure I don't throw more $$ down the drain. Can't afford a Twin light (yet :)) Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Alan - an alternative would be the Hakuba LH-1 ballhead (Ebay) but you need to replace the small headhead with a larger generic one with a male 1/4" end fitting.

Brian,
I have a question that may be stupid. I am not familiar with brackets, but looking to get that one as I just got the 420 EXII.
Where do you get that replacement part you are talking about, is this something standard you will find in most specialized photo shop, or something you order on the net?
Thank you for your time

Martin - you may be able to get a cheapo ballhead from a retail chain there (if you have one) - I got mine in Jessops in the UK.

Not sure if this is what you meant by flash bracket, but really Right Stuff Perfect Portrait Package has a spectacular bracket. I have two of them. Best in Class (IMHO).

Can anyone recommend this bracket macro work?
Who's using it?
I'm keen to replace my home made bracket with something more study as the snake type arm I am using (salvaged from an adjustable lamp) is just not quite strong enough for the weight of the e430-EX.
Thanks for you help!

The delta has a slight reputation for being ok to start with but then developing a sagging arm.

What is the next most "cost effective" flash bracket out there that will do the same things as the Delta?
Someone on one of these threads recommended the Dotline RPS Digital Flash Bracket Kit.
Thoughts?

I use the wimberly bracket, a little pricey, but as they say you get what you pay for.
very adaptable, heavy duty. Breaks down well.
I'm very happy with it .

I use the Hakuba LH-1 and I like it, the main problem is the ballhead which is weak. for now it holds my 48-AF1 firmly, but someday I might have to replace the head for something stronger.

Yeah, the wimberly brackets are out of my price range...

I made my own brackets from pieces and parts before there were really good ones were available. I have found for me this was the best bracket based on my requirements.
Cost was an issue, but requirements won out.
Thanks,

I also read somewhere about someone putting a bunch of tape on their Delta to give it more strength...anyone else read that? I can't remember where I saw it...
