View Full Version : Yong Nuo YN-460 Question

I've been offered a YN-460 as a first flash to have a play with, I am aware that it's fully manual but that doesn't bother me.

My question is, I know it has an AF-Assist lamp, but how does it work - that is, how does it know when to come on? From what I can gather, the flash only has a terminal for triggering, so I'm a little confused as to how the flash will know when to illuminate the AF lamp? I also can't see a button on the flash dedicated for it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, Just trying to clarify

Cheers

It has a little red window, no lamp inside, it's hollow plastic.

hmm...

"Features: Reflector/Soft board, Diffusing board, Optic control sensor, Assist light, Flash head, Battery cover, Lock ring, Hot shoe mount, Connect point"

It would be extremely dodge if they provided an empty red window...

for the price i suppose it wouldn't surprise me...

Anyone else got anything else to say on the matter?

I have 3 of these flashes and I can say with out a doubt the YN460 has no af assist lamp. If the specs say that they must be wrong.

Does the flash foot on the YN-460 just have the center contact? If so, it cannot have focus assist (there is another contact on the side of the flash foot rail).

To have focus assist the flash foot must have those four smaller contacts in addition to the center contact.

Enjoy! Lon

Thats what I was looking for, well it would appear that it has 2 - One (the center contact) and the other which i can (looking from my camera's hotshoe footprint) can only assume is some sort of locking pin.

Looks like it is an empty red window then....

Thanks for the replies :)

I just heard back from yong-nuo them selves on the matter and here is the response:

'Hi friend,

Thank you very much for your letter.

Yes, it has an auto focus assist light.

You just need to set this flash up in the " S2" mode, please kindly note.

Any problems, please feel free to let me know.

Wishing you a good day.

Best regards,
hkyongnuophotoequipment'

The plot thickens.

Can anyone with a YN-460 confirm if it has AF-Assist or not? And in S2 mode, how does the assist beam know when to come on... (EG is it triggered by AF-On or is it just constant... I assume the latter

EDIT: Just got 'postage article awaiting collection' ticket.. will go collect it in about half an hour... Will post back when I can confirm if it has AF Assist or not....

I just ordered a couple of these to keep in my bag. As manual flash units most people seem to like them. Plus they are pretty much disposable at this price.

I don't know about the assist beam but I kind of doubt it would work if it has it at all. They do have the optical slave but if you use a RF trigger it won't be of much use. I do know the YN462 has nothing extra. No assist beam, no optical sensor and no marks on the case to indicate what the power settings are.

The YN-460 does not have a auto focus assist light
The S2 setting is for using this flash in the optical off camera mode.
So that when your camera has the red eye reduction turned on.
The YN-460 will ignore the first preflash and then fire on the 2nd flash.

This is a full manual flash with no ttl, or no auto focus assist light.
