View Full Version : WORLDWIDE PHOTO WEEK: PART 166 -- Urban Nature
joayne
25th of May 2009 (Mon), 11:34
Every week we select a new theme, and then go out and shoot that theme. This week the theme is "Urban Nature". Be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme -- the sky's the limit!
Here are the rules:
1. Shots need to be taken between sunrise Monday and sunset the following Sunday. Because this activity is supposed to encourage us to get out and shoot, please don't post old shots from your archives. Snap shots and art are equally welcome -- just get out & shoot, and then share!
2. Post your shots at any time during the week.
3. Post a maximum of two shots if you're uploading them to POTN (i.e., attaching them). You can post more than two if you're linking to shots that are not hosted by POTN (i.e.,embedding them), but keep within POTN rules. Also keep within POTN rules about size. A copy of the size rules can be found here: IMAGE POSTING RULES (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=194511)
An index to previous weeks can be found here: POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO DAY INDEX (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=170603)
That's it! Have fun!

Hey all, remember me?
I finally decided to get off my lazy rump and participate for once. Went to a favorite park of mine knowing that I would get at least one shot and ended up with two for here and a few others that I liked too.
Shopping centers around here have so much pavement that they are required to build retaining ponds for rain water runoff. These ponds are often full of all kinds of nature. Today I spotted a duck, a few turtles, several small birds, a butterfly, some bumble bees, and some type of rodent that didn't want to be identified.

And what nature wouldn't be urban without a transmission tower running through the trees.

This wasn't exactly what I initially had in mind with this theme, but we had such a beautiful rainbow Monday night, I had to get a few shots from the back yard. It definitely loses some of its "punch" when saving for the web.

I've never had good luck shooting rainbows either, but yours looks pretty good to me!

LOL, I hope not on the archiving.
Thanks for the kind words about my son. And yes, he IS growing like a weed. Already over 21 pounds at 7 months!

Ok, here is a spot of Urban Nature...
I quit using plant foods and herbicides and pesticides on one area of my yard where my desert tortoises live. I introduced wildflowers and other local indigenous plants. Another member of this forum brought me back this sinage from a recent trip to Oregon:

A couple taken on the short walk home from a haircut! First is a large St George 'flag' that has adorned the side of a local pub for a number of years, but slowly getting masked by the growth of trees and weeds. Second shows a weed/plant growing amongst the 'aspiration for all sized wallets' scene - often something of the 'nature' of the urban self!

John_B -- I won't even ask how that got there!
Mike -- I didn't know such ponds existed. Thanks for the info. Your son looks great. I still remember that other photo of him with his hair standing on end, and the thought of it still makes me smile.
Dave -- nice interpretation.
Joayne -- Love your DOF.
lavanut -- Rainbows are definitely hard to capture. the best I ever took was at Niagara Falls.
The situation with my parents has stabilized somewhat, and I was actually able to do some shooting yesterday.
Here is my take on Urban Nature --
shots taken at a market at which farmers bring nature's bounty to an urban setting.

Hey Barbara, Nice Shots... I love farmers markets. One recently started up here, but it gets so hot in summer, I wonder how it will fare or if they will close it down for summer.
I like repetition as that can mean patterns :)
By the way BLS, I got your PM.. I will start next weeks thread either tonight or Monday Morning... That is Pacific Daylight Time! :)

I PM'd Joayne to ask her to assume my role as facilitator (or whatever you call it) of WWPW.
I find that I can no longer do it due to the ongoing situation with my parents.
They have help now, so maybe things will get better for them soon, and I can participate more often!

Yeah, the market shots where interesting - I like that stuff.
Thanks for great 'facilitation' Barb and hope things sort out soon with your parents care. Good luck as well to Jo! You have a hard act to follow ;-)

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the rainbow. I just wish the photo did it justice.
Joayne, I'm sure you'll do fine as facilitator! I just found this thread a little while back and love it! It's a challenge just for the purpose of shooting & sharing. I enjoy seeing what folks come up with.
BLS, good luck with your parents. I went through a difficult time with mine though it was many years apart. We lost mom back in '95 and dad last year. My prayers go out to you and your family for whatever your situation is. It's hard having aging parents.
Now if I can only get one more shot before sunset tonight... :)
