Yeah I know these questions have been asked before and i'm not going ask the difference between the two. But looking at the 430 EX II and the 580 EX II. There's a bit of difference in the price. Just enough to where the 580 is out of reach. The 430 price is more likely. I'm looking at a strobist type set up for location shooting. Right now it would be a one light set up. Would the 430 be enough, or should I just wait and save my pennies and get the 580 later on? I have a cheap Quantaray right now that the ebay trigger set I have will not work on. I was told they did work with the 580. Will they work with the 430 as well?
Please help. If you know of location setup that would work just as well for aboutthe same amount of money, let me know...

if you are looking to go completely off-camera strobist style, check out the Canon 540ez, same guide number power settings etc... as the 580exII, and can be had used for around $80 to $90, check ebay, KEH, etc.
I shouldn't be telling you this, cause I've been waiting for one to pop up in the sell forum here.

I have both and I prefer the 580. More adjustment as far as power and that's a big enough sell for me. I also prefer the build better. I too am like you and use mine as a strobist setup and I'm completely happy with it. Save the pennies.

If you are going off camera strobist the world opens up. Check out Midwest Photo Exchange for options. If you need ETTL the stick with a Canon, the 430 EX II being a very capable flash. You could also use the 430 EX getting one used very affordably.

I have the 430ex, not the 430EXII and I had all sorts of troubles with random firing with the cactus v2 triggers. If you are going to stick with the radio triggers, then I dont know that I would go with a canon speedlite but rather a vivitar 285hv. At less than a hundred bucks each you cant go wrong. If you are going to build a set that allows you to use ettl then you might as well get the 580exII to use as a master then build from there/.
