Challenge #225 - TIME MACHINE

I've noticed a number of people on this forum, and a couple others really make an art of photographing fine time pieces. This challenge is about time...photograph any time piece in an artistic fashion, or, let your creative side run free with the whole idea of time travel, or anything that speaks to the general theme of time. Most of all...Have fun with this!

Mike

KEVAN _G9-GLASS IS FULL-I really like the way you used color in this shot. The background complements, yet also provides a subtle contrast that really brings the watch face forward. The reflections on the inside of the glass further enhance the image to make for a relatively simple, yet very interesting photo. Nicely done!!

CHISEL-KNOCKING ON TIMES DOOR-Great photo! The colors, contrast, and lighting are spot on. What I first thought were a couple areas that were a little blown out appear to be either just badly weathered, or covered in dust, or maybe a bit of both. The only thing that bothered me a little was having the top of her head left out of the picture, either because of the framing, or the way it was cropped. This may well have been done to eliminate other elements that would have been distracting...as I can't see the whole scene I'm only speculating here. Overall, I really liked this shot!

CAR-JUBILEE TIME-Beautiful shot, Carolyn! This appears to be an historic time piece of some significance. The setting is very clean and uncluttered, and the colors are not overly contrasting, but your off-camber photo lends a great deal interest, and draws my eye right into the subject. Well done!

MAUREEN SOUZA-OLD FAITHFUL-The condition of the watch case, coupled with your title, lead me to believe this watch has seen some service! To my eye, the background is a little distracting, as are the blown areas on the watch face, but the tack sharp image can't be faulted in any way. ( Gotta love those old Pro 1's )

RPOLITSR-STOPWATCH-Nothing says time quite like a stopwatch! I think what impressed me the most about this picture was your exposure. The time piece itself is impressive, but getting the photo properly exposed so the numbers on the clock are properly visible, without getting blown out, or having the rest of the picture underexposed is a feat in and of itself! Was this done in a single exposure, or in post processing? Just curious!

TOMY-NIGHTTIME-The back lighting on the clock is everything in this picture! I don't know if this is out of the camera, or was enhanced in post processing, but it's very effective! Nice shot!

MARIE-TIME OVER THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT-Stunning detail! ( and there is a lot of detail on that building ) Beautiful composition, perfect exposure, focus is spot on...I guess that pretty well covers it! Lovely photo! As I was looking at it, I couldn't help thinking what a fantastic HDR photo could be made out of that if you could catch it at a time when you had a bit of drama going on in the sky!

PIET-TIME PASSES BY-This is a slightly different tack on the theme, and a very enjoyable one! I was surprised that the banner is in English, as the location appears to be in Berlin. ( I even did a little research on Annie, as I'm not really familiar with her work, although it appears I should be, and have surly seen a lot of it with out knowing who she is.) The only thing I would have done differently on this shot is to (try to) clone out the two wires crossing the picture, as they are pretty distracting. Beyond that, it's a nice shot, and as I stated earlier, a very enjoyable perspective on the time theme!

THIS WEEKS WINNERS

1ST-CHISEL-KNOCKING ON TIMES DOOR

2ND-CAR-JUBILEE TIME

3RD-MARIE-TIME OVER THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

Thank you!

Here's the original uncropped, unedited (just resampled) image. I do have problems with the G9 (and previously, with my old G8 ) with highlights blowing out, but in this case it is mainly heavy layers of dust. This is in Staglieno cemetery in Genoa; I've been spending a lot of time there shooting the past couple of years, and the small maintanence crew is overwhelmed by the scale of the place. Everything is coated with dust and bird droppings. The woman is white marble, stunning bright white when she was first carved, but turned dark grey by the dust.

Congrats to Chisel, Car and Marie!! Beautiful entries.

To be honest, mine was a lazy entry. I wanted to participate and had planned on getting out to a cool sundial but too many things got in my way. So I took a cheesy snap of my watch just so I could play :)

Congratulations to chisel, Car and marie. I absolutely agree with the chosen winners, Michael. Those are hard to beat subjects beautifully complemented by very good technical skills.

I had no hope to find the DeLorean of Doc Brown to take a picture of an authentic time machine for the challenge :) so I turned my eyes to this time display that seems handcrafted rather than a mass production machine.
It was marking the pace for the archers in the Olympic Festival of Quito the past week where I shot near 400 pictures, most of them snapshots (including my entry).

There were no special tricks for the exposure. I was lucky, because there was the correct amount of natural sun light to balance with the luminosity of the LED display. I shot it in RAW using Center-weighted average metering, reduced the exposure a half f stop on Adobe Camera RAW and slightly increased the saturation for richer color. Cloning the cables completed the process.

I enjoyed all the interesting comments on every entry Michael, thanks for hosting.

chisel, I bought my first Canon camera in Genoa back in 1970. I spent only three hours or so in the city (one hour on the camera store). I attended a course in Turin; my original plan was to return to visit the city in a couple of weeks but the planes changed and I never returned to Genoa.

Michael,

thanks for the critics.
Yes, it's located in Berlin; the only location of her exhibition in Europe, i think. It was worth the travel to Berlin...
You're right about the wires, but time was too short to edit the picture after i decided to post it. Will be done in the next days...;)

Thanks for hosting this challenge!
Congrats to the rest, great pictures everybody.

Congrats to the winners! Terrific photos. I wish I could have gotten a bit more involved in this challenge, but I had limited "time" to play. I had to reread the challenge after seeing chisel's entry and I just knew I was way off the mark. Bravo to you all!

Congratulations to Chisel and Marie and thanks Michael for hosting and judging and for my 2nd place.
My rather large clock - as the plaque says was formerly in St Enochs Station in Glasgow but was moved to Cumbernauld in 1977, the Queens Silver Jubilee Year. It was recently moved to the 'new' part of Cumbernauld Town Centre as the 'old' part it was originally in was knocked down as part of a face lift to the town - it has won several 'carbunkle' awards and North Lanarkshire are trying to shed this downtrodden image - not very successfully through! For any of you who have seen the film 'Gregory's Girl' This is the clock that featured in the movie where Gregory was to meet his date - a little bit of useless information for you!
Lovely shots everyone - as usual, see you all again next week!

You didn't miss the mark at all, Kevin. Both of the pics you posted this week were nice shots, and well within the parameters of the challenge!

If that's an adult walking past, that clock must be what...maybe 6-7 meters in diameter? It would look really out of place in my living room!:D

Great job hosting the fun challenge, Michael, it prompted me to finally try out that mini tripod I bought and had never used!

And, of course, a salute to the winners Chisel, Car, and Marie for their fine images. :)

Very nice shots this week from all! :)
