ETTL II stands for evaluative through the lens, its the method of flash exposure calculation canon uses. Shutter sync is the method of making sure the flash goes off when the shutter is open. First curtain sync (the standard setting) goes off when the shutter is first fully open. Second curtain sync fires at the end of the exposure before the second curtain closes. Its useful for situations where you want to capture motion in the exposure and then have the flash fire afterward. You might want to check the stickies at the top of the forum for threads that will help explain this better.
