I did not want to ask this in the other IS Lenses thread, so I started another.
I noticed that the instruction manual to my 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM says not to remove the lense from the camera with the IS turned on. Why is that?
I forgot to do this a couple of times this weekend. Did I hurt the lense any?

You will immediatley have it blow up into a million peices! LOL actually I beleive that this has to do with the sudden loss of power to the lens and IS chips. My manual says that errors might be produced. I think its like just unplugging your computer by pullling th eplug from the wall. wont normally fry the machine on the first time, but over time this cant be good for the electronics.

Wow,. I have,. what.. let me count in my head,.
..
.
.
.... four IS lenses ranging from the 70-300mm DO up to a 500mm f/4 and NEVER once have I turned off the lenses IS switch to take the lens off?
Mind you I do try to make a point of tturning off the camera. This is something you should do with digitals,. perhaps this mitigates the need to mess with the les switch?

You should not remove the lens from the camera while the IS is engaged, i.e. you just half-pressed the shutter and it's still "whirring".
There is no problem when you remove the lens with the IS switch in the "ON" position, but the IS isn't running at the moment. So you do not need to switch the IS to the "OFF" position before you remove the lens, you just have to wait a few seconds for the IS to stop by itself after (half-)pressing the shutter button.

I think the key point is what Cyber mentioned, No Power, camera or lens!

Hi Folks,
Jesper is right, the warning relates to removing the lens "while the lens has IS running". When you use IS you can hear it "click" when it switches off, the Click is the floating lens group being parked back in the neutral position. My guess is that it "locks" the group into a stable position and that if you remove power before it seats the lens group in th eneutral position then you could find that the floating group moves when the lens is transported.
Anyone know for sure?
