I am just a beginner with a new toy.

I just purchase a Canon Rebel XSI camera and am learning to use it. This picture was taken with the default portrait settings with a 75 - 300 mm 1:4-56 lens.

I would like to know what people think.
Also, how to get this type of quality picture with the manual settings.

When I wanted to learn manual, I set it to Av (so I could use all of the camera features) and tried to "guess" proper exposure. I looked at the light, shot, chimped, histogrammed, etc, and then reshot. After using Av mode for a few weeks, I switched to manual and got decent with it.

With this shot: Crop it tighter, or get closer next time. Otherwise, start with Av and work up to manual.

Very cute snap. When you are using manual and you are outside in the bright sun, just remember to keep your ISO at the lowest setting possible. Start at 100 or so. Lower the number, the less noise you will have. This is a good shot for using the default portrait setting.
