View Full Version : Anybody want to take a stab at how this was lit?

Heres a great example of balancing ambient with strobe. I think it was lit with sunlight as a natural hair light and what looks to be a single big softbox to camera left. All the subjects are evenly exposed and balanced well with the ambient light behind them. Has anyone taken a shot like this and acheived similar results?

And possibly a golden reflector camera right to lift the shadows a bit?

You copuld say a nice big softbox on the left, and as noted a reflector panel right for fill. Maybe 2 boxes?

Blow that lady's right eye up in PP, see what the catchlights say

The resolution stinks, too hard to tell.

The sun is in the back and I believe there were 2 reflectors one camera right and one camera left. The eyes are too squinty for a flash to have been used. The reflectors would cause the people to squint from the bright sunlight. I ran into that once on a shoot in sunlight. The reflector caused the subject to squint too much to use the picture.

+1 I have done a shot like this and just used a couple of big reflector panels and it can cause that squint.

Both kids have their hand in their faces. This would never work in them old days. Changing times I guess. Do clients really like these shots nowadays? It's kinda cute I have to say.

there is evidence of a bright light source from the front; look at his wristwatch and the her lip gloss.
very likely that an extra light source was used in addition to the sun

This is a very nice shot, but it leaves lots of questions as to the lighting.
There is a strong shadow on the grass in front of the family, suggesting back lighting, I would assume the photog was using the sun for this as the bush in the top right also appears back lite. I also think there is some sort of on axis lighting as well. Look at the mom's lower lip and the highlight, dead center. I would think the on axis lighting is used to eliminate shadows from the natural ambient light from behind.

Funny, I remember a photog fighting with a kid years ago to put his hands down. Now days it is an indicator of a cute child/moment. My, how times change.

Definitely using the sun as back light. That's a given.
Large softbox to camera left and maybe a reflector to the right.

Not only that, but the guy's knee tells me the grass was a bit wet.

Either that or the boy was sitting on his knee moments before and decided to go.
