It was a baptism of fire - a wedding!! I carried this monster round all day and it gave some spectacular results. Some of the colours are just beautiful and the brightness was MUCH better than my 28-135 Canon USM IS lens I had. Also the depth of field is VERY controlable.

Overall the camera weight has doubled but it is worth getting a sore shoulder! I normally do car racing photos so I'm used to carrying kit around. Also it makes you look very pro, an important thing when you are jostling for position among smaller cameras and lenses.

I've not made my mind up about the IS capability of it though, some shots at like a 125th were slightly blurred. Time will tell though.

If you want to have a look at the results from this weekend, http://photographynorthwest.com/ben-emma. I'm no wedding-pro, in fact this is the first time I've done still wedding photography.

(edited) - forgot to say, comments are welcome, especially if they help me to improve.

hmm. I just had a look at the photo's.
I am no pro, and have never done a wedding, but to me some of the peoples faces look really washed out, or really really bright. At times it looks like the Sun was just way to bright. LIke high noon, or something.

I tell you though, I give you alot of credit for shooting this wedding.
It's seems to be a very tedious thing, shooting weddings.

Dave, how to find it indoors with flash do you get a lot of red eye?

Not too bad, a little, which is removed in Photoshop.

One trick I saw with direct sunlight was a portable screen that partially blocks the sunlight (just as a Honey Locus tree would). A lot of shots for magazines use this. While it is somewhat impractical for candids, they are collapsable and a friend could hold it up while taking shots.

I have never tried this myself though and I don't know where to get them.

Are you still a real big fan of this lens? I was thining about picking up a 70-200mm f2.8 IS. I ruled out the 100-400mm L since I'm using a 1.6x body and plan to do so for some time the 100mm is too long for my needs.

I shoot a lot of races for fun in the summer (looking for a new fast tele) and the 28-300mm IS appealed to me for use in the pits as well. I don't have a second body to swap to at this point. I'm basically looking for an L to replace my 75-300 IS so I figure none will disappoint, but the 28-300mm seems like alot of cash for a slow aperture lens and I'm not a huge fan of the push-pull but I could be convinced if needed.

The other thought I need to consider is this lens too heavy to truly use on a digital rebel frame?

horrgakx, what did you think of the push/pull operation? It bothered me so I ended up acquiring 70-200L IS.

Also, did you find a bit slow?

Thanks.

The 70-200 would do you well at a wedding. That and the 16-35 is a good kit to have. Idealy you'd want two bodies. One with the 16 and one with the 70.

I don't do a lot of weddings, but the appeal of the sure all race weekend lens sounded nice. Places like Laguna Seca have so much dust and sand in the air, my 75-300 took a beating and changing lenses was a PITA!!! The 28-300L would be ideal for that, but would it be ideal the rest of the time like on vacation and stuff?

And keep in mine I'm using a Drebel too, not a 1Ds or something. And I'm in no hurry to get a new DSLR yet. I'm trying to push the little drebel until dead, it took me forever it seams to buy that sucker. This next L will be it for quite some time as well.
