Photo #1. Noticed this guy who was speeding away while the girl was struggling to mantain herself & helmet in place, almost flying back.

Photo#2 This guy on red bike was really speeding on a busy road as if he was on race track.

This is my first panning attempt & although the angle is not that great, i like how they came out.
Let me know your comments.

Cheers

P1. Composition needs work IMHO. Too many white vehicles, and you're too far out from subject. Get closer as you did in pic 2. Also you should've waited for a bright car (red or yellow) to pan on, the subject would get more attention being both sharp and warm. You want the background blandish in a pan like this, but you want the subject (bike and clothing etc) bright complimentary colors.

P2. Much better composition, but still needs some added impact. Hmmmmm. Maybe pay the rider to pop a wheelie next time. It could sell as a Suzi poster!

I always try (try being the operative word) to capture them coming into the picture rather than leaving it. Its all down to practice practice practice.

Very Nice. I have to try some of these myself one day...

With the way these guys ride their bikes in nyc panning them would be a real challenge. They do like 90 on side streets. It's rediculous.

Great panning shots, Raj! Lovely scooter in #1 too. Maybe it's my monitor, #2 the rider is not as sharp as #1.

Thanks everybody for reviewing & posting your comments :-)

Carzee, neil, I will definately keep your suggestions in mind I try panning next time. Trouble with streen pans is that you dont have much opportunity to plan your shots ... However a parallel or coming in new should definately look better.

Bruce, good luck for finding your riders :-)

For #1 : iso100, f10, 1/80s, multipattern metering
For #2 : iso100, f10, 1/160s, multipattern meteting
focal length 50mm for both (both shot with 50mm f1.8)

I guess for panning although we want to isolate the subject in motion, we still need a high DOF. Very low f-value will blur the background eliminating pan effects.

Great shots Raj. Try lowering the shutter speed a bit more to increase the blur in the background. This will isolate the subject from a distracting background (at least I hope it does :D )

I like the second one better. It's a shame that white car wasn't a darker colour, it would have made the bike stand out more.

I think they are great for the first time. I've never tried anything like that.
