I visited Christchurch about 12 years ago, and loved it. What a nice town.

Those look about the same size as the ones that put dimples in the hood of my truck while on a trip to Colorado, USA! My mother in law has one in her freezer that is the size of a baseball!! OUCH!!!

Yeah, hail can be pretty wild. These hailstones fell during a storm last year.Thankfully there were very few of them (only one hit the roff of the house and it sounded like a bomb going off). Would have been fairly scary if they fell in any great volume.

If you don't live where there is extreme weather, you may not believe this. Last week in Colorado, there were hailstones reported to be tennis ball size and softball size! A few years ago, a woman in Denver tried to dash out to her car in a shopping mall parking lot and the infant she was carrying was killed by hailstones. Apparently, the front range of Colorado and the Florida panhandle are two places on the planet that have extreme thunderstorms of this type. It is rare to go more than 3 or 4 years and not have to have our roofs re-shingled due to hail damage.

Funny you should say that. The storm that hit my in-laws place(NE of Colordo Springs) gave them a new roof. I'm just glad they were covered by insurance.

hey, Mark, your pics are brilliant,,,wow,,,,they are much bigger than those fell last week here. Freaky too,,look like some foreign objects. I wouldn't want to stay outside taking photos if hailstones are of the size of tennis ball or softball.

And one of my friends whose house is just outside a horse riding school told me that she watched the horses that night from her window during the storm. They were unmoving and still. I bet it hurts anyway. Feel for those lovely animals. James Wright wrote a lovely poem about horses: A Blessing.

~

A Blessing

Just off the highway to Rochester, Minnesota,
Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass.
And the eyes of those two Indian ponies
Darken with kindness.
They have come gladly out of the willows
To welcome my friend and me.
We step over the barbed wire into the pasture
Where they have been grazing all day, alone.
They ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness
That we have come.
They bow shyly as wet swans. They love each other.
There is no loneliness like theirs.
At home once more, they begin munching the young tufts of spring in the darkness.
I would like to hold the slenderer one in my arms,
For she has walked over to me
And nuzzled my left hand.
She is black and white,
Her mane falls wild on her forehead,
And the light breeze moves me to caress her long ear
That is delicate as the skin over a girl's wrist.
Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom.

James Wright

Thank you very much, Marie, you actually found the poem, it is such a lovely poem, I like it very much. To make it all more moving and romantic, I am in love with this girl who told me the horse story.

We would sit outside her house for hours to watch those animals at night. Sorry for being sentimental!:D

That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom.

From this poem I guess Wright is close to W.C.William's power that turns the ordinary into something beautiful and essentially poetic. If you are interested in poetry, pls take a look at my blog.

Many cheers for you.

There is a definite link between photography and poetry.

thank you. sometimes we wonder if someone may be offended if we go ahead and do something
like me putting the verse here
am glad that you weren't

your story is really lovely.
I hope all is going very well with the girl

it is sad to think of the horses just standing there while the huge hailstones bounced off them ,
from what I can gather in what you said. it must have been sad to watch the scene

thank you, I will look at what you mention tomorrow

Ha ha, Yeah, of course, most of the time I avoid being so literary on forums because people would be offended. All is going well here. Nice to talk to you of course. Do you know that Robert Creeley, another American poet that I love most, died recently.
