I've been reading all the remarks regarding the 50-500.
Does it focus fast in action situations - wildlife & birds ?

The Canon is so pricey, yet I read it's the best.
Would I be disappointed in the Sigma?

I use it for aircraft photography and am happy with focusing speed. For birds it depends on what sort of flight path they're taking - if they're swooping about a lot and changing direction rapidly, the AF will have a little trouble keeping up. However my brief experience with the Canon 100-400 is that the AF performance is very similar.

If you have the money I'd go for the Canon purely for the IS advantage.
