I live under the flightpath of the airport [Which scares the crap out of me given what happened about 20 minutes from my house in Feburary..] and since I got my 100-400 I've wanted to nail some planes..

Well this weekend the paths switched and I got a bunch of them taking off, so I started nailing them with my 100-400 as they passed for practice when i finally get to an airshow...

These are my 3 favorites:

ISO1600 - f/11 - 1/2000 - 220mm

^This one suffered from a LOT of highly distracting noise before i cleaned it up..i know that much..but i feel that the NR may have smudged it up a bit...

ISO1600 - f/8 - 1/6400 - 400mm

^-This ones noise issue was less problematic...But shooting at 1600 was probubly a poor judgement call, and i dont remember WHY i did so [I think i felt that when i put my aperture at f/11 for a while i needed to compensate with a little extra ISO...but in hindsight this was a bad move...]

ISO1600 - f/11 - 1/2000 - 365mm

^- This one is my favorite, I think this one turned out the best, I finally got the right spot to stand, the lighting had gotten slightly better, and well..its a gray plane and made metering a heck of a lot easier...

Anyways ^^ Critique welcome!

I would try opening up the aperture to 6.3 or even 5.6 and get that ISO down to 400 or less. If you can keep your shutter speed at 1/500 or faster you should be ok. If you are gonna shoot prop aircraft at the airshow you are gonna want a lot slower shutter, 1/250 or 1/320 will give you some nice prop blur, if memory serves.
Try this, set to Tv 1/320, ISO 100 and practice your panning technique, if you can get clear shots you will do well at the airshow. Jets are easy, Mustangs are a bit tougher, the Red Bull guys, I just watch them.

I agree. Lowering the ISO would be pretty helpful, if only to eliminate the noise.

I agree with that..I dont know what I was smoking with the ISO1600..

Sadly...the DASH-8s dont go this route frequently for me to get practice on some prop-driven aircraft....They go another route [I live only about 5-10 from the airport, and 20 where that Continental Dash-8 crashed into the ground..which is the route the DASH-8s seem to take] Maybe when it clears up ill walk down to Charlie the Butcher or something and see what i can nail [Charlie the Butcher is a local delicious resturaunt near the airport, the aircraft very often come in VERY low over it...]

And its raining for the next few days...which means blah skies....:( Oh well
