For a minute I thought you were talking to me ;)

Its the window that caught you out, big light contrast between his face and the window and you have exposed for the brighter.

It's not underexposed, and more exposure would have blown it out. I wouldn't have shot the window right when the light was coming in it.

monkey, if you shot this in RAW then you may be able to recover details on subject/face a bit by using shadow/highlight recovery fx in PS or any other editor. Not sure how good this fx works with compressed images.

The problem is that when things are that dark in PS, any exposure recovery is going to be very noisey.

Its a B&W pictures so color noise will be minimal anyway. based on personal taste noise may actually add extra flare in BW pics. Just my 2 cents.
But you are right, noise will definately show up with recovery.

Some extra details but sorry monkey I dont see any great improvement on the face & also the window is blown out more near the head. I guess first one is better.
