Stacking exposures

I'd like to get into stacking exposures but I have no idea what the best, most foolproof software to use is. I also don't know much about stacking, and there's a lot of information online to read through...can someone give me the basics to get started, please?

I tried a search already and couldn't find anything introductory.

Are you talking about stacking shots at different focus points (ie focus stacking) or stacking shots with different exposure - ie HDR stuff ?

If the former I did a quick guide here using freeware combine software.
