I know I know I know... I hate reading these threads too, and I don't like to add to hysteria. I just want to see if anyone has experienced this before I send the body to canon and live w/o a camera while it gets fixed.

First off, I am using firmware 1.1.0

The two issues I am having are... (they only way to fix them is to remove the cmos batteryfor a few secconds)

1.) At times in AV mode I can not change the aperture. Both the jog dial and the rear "wheel" seem to still be working. I know this because if i switch to M i can adjust both the Shutter and the aperture values with the dials. I can also adjust the Shutter value and EC in TV mode. It happens with multipule lenses

2.)At times (fewer than the previous issue) I can not adjust the Exposure Compensation at all i TV or AV.. The dial is "still working" because it functions normally in M. This also happens with varrious lenses.

*bonus* Is this normal operation for a 20D/550ex???

When in AV and the 550ex is set to manual output, I only get the shutter value of the highest sync (BEFORE YOU flame me and say change my CFN, I don't have that option set, and have adjusted it several times to see if it was "stuck") any way if i have the flash in regular, non-HS mode on M output (ie: 1/1 1/128 ), i get a shutter value of 1/250 regardless, if i switch the 550ex to Highspeed Sync, I only get a shutter value of 1/8000.

That sounds like the perfect way to keep it.

kawter2, you're not crazy. I have not verified it, personally, but what you saw has been observed by others. See this thread (http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=329513). IOW, Av mode and manual flash don't mix well. When using manual flash, stick to M mode on the camera.

Thanks for the confirmation and the link..

I agree 100%, that is why I just found this out after having the camera over 8mos or so. I was shooting the flash with manual power and camera in M then turned to AV later, forgetting that the flash was still on M output, then i noticed the funky ****ter speeds

Out of curiousity, does it still not function after you tap the * button? I have my * button set to focus, but in Av mode sometimes the dial won't change the the EC. After a quick tap on * it starts working. Not sure if it's a problem or rather a funky programming oversight.

Hummn I will have to check that because I am also using the * to focus..

I am not experiencing any of the first 2 issues you describe (I don't have a 550EX so I don't know about that one) in with either of my 2 20D's. If I were you, I would upgrade to the latest firmware to see if it helps and if it does not, get it serviced.
