I will be shooting the D1 event on friday and I am wondering if the 100-400mm es lens is a good option. I will also be using a UV filter as well. Will this stop my camera down? If so, how much? What should I do if it gets cloudy? I have a feeling its going to be.

Perfect! Thank you! Where were you standing exactly? Were you pretty close?

I tried, but it has a wicked kick when hitting the apex. I wouldn't recommend it... plus, the seat really rides up my arse.

Around 300 feet from the cars.

Should I use a circular polarizer filter when panning? Or should I use a lens hood or both?

Hood is good. Polarizer has limited use in action photography and can be ignored. Just take the lens and point it at the cars. :)

I was just being facetious... in regard to your title... "Re: 100-400mm EF good for drifting?"
Just taking it in the literal sense and a failed attempt at humor it seems... It is okay, most people don't get my humor(or simply choose to ignore it). Mostly for my own amusement, as I believe; if you can't amuse yourself, who can you amuse?;)

Nah, I got it. While looking for a serious answer I was un-amused..but got a little chuckle shortly after I posted. :p

Personally I always use a CP... I love being able to see through the windshield... Cars are generally facing the same way for any given position I'm at... If I move I readjust the CP...
For example... the "passenger" makes this picture (for me anyways!)... With out the CP I doubt you would be able to see him...

Works for Drifting too... ;)

I thought so, aside from the normal dirt issues.

I personally beg to differ.
I use a CPL on all of my on track shots whenever possible as long as it does require me to push my ISO's past 400

If you have media access, any 70-200 variant will be your standard bread and butter. Its not too long, not too heavy, not too short.

Could you guys please post your settings for us rookies? Thanks! Great shots btw. I no longer appreciate anything I've done so far.

I think the CP is a must. Most of the time. I just recently started shooting one and wondered how the heck I ever got a good photo without one. However I'm usually shooting boats. But a Motor vehicle is a motor vehicle.
