Anybody have any info or links to sites with info on the G2? I today ordered my G1 from a friend that works for Canon to be told that they do not make it anymore(he has been away until now, I got the money for my birthday last week to go and buy it). The G2 is apparently comig out in September. My friend
can get no info on it at the mo and I can't find anything about it on the net.

I just hope it is compatable with the lensmate adapter too I ordered one and the filters to go with it as I knew I was definately gonna get a G1 until this.

If not, anyone in the UK after a lensmate adapter, Sunpak UV and Polarizing filters, the Macro lens set and the Lens cap let me know here and I'll let you know. I haven't got them yet but they were shipped to me on the 2/8.

At the moment I'm slightly sad as I couldnt wait to have a play with my G1 and slightly happy as I'll be quick off the mark with a G2.

This is very strange. Why would you order a camera from a friend who works at Canon? Try a retailer.

Best regards,
Dirk

Hi,

you can order the LensMate from Susan Doel (http://www.lensmateonline.com/G1buy.html, see thread 'tiffen lens armor').
I received my G1 two weeks ago, ordered it from ny-camera. It is still on their 'special offer' web page today, they say that everything they have on this page is in stock. If you really want the G1, go for it !
With the G1, you already know the pros and cons, who knows what the 'G2' will be like (for instance, I find the swiveling LCD to be a *major* plus, and I like to have a small discrete camera) ?

Hmm. The price at NY Camera is about the same as what I was gonna pay anyway. At the moment I am really just looking for specs on the G2 so I can compare the 2. It is strange that my friend says it comes out next month yet I can find no info anywhere. You'd think someone would have leaked it by now. As it is only a month I figured I'd see what I can find out first before I go for a G1, hopefully if the G2 is announced before then I will get a G1 even cheaper.

This is just a guess, but I believe the next major marketing season is for Christmas. We're already nearing the end of the Summer vacation season. If Canon is following the same marketing schedule as retailers then we should expect to see the G2 hit the shelves sometime in late October.
I don't think the "Back-to-school" advertising counts for this type of product.
Plus, Canon and it's resellers still probably have warehouses full of G1's. I wouldn't expect to see anything untill a major dent is put in those supplies.

So to sum it up, I vote for a release corresponding with the Christmas shopping season.

That's just my opininon. . . I could be wrong.

I almost forgot:
A filmmaker buddy of mine is in line to try out Canon's successor to the XL-1 digital video camera. Canon is releasing this camera to a very select group of people for field testing at the end of this month. Expecting a public release sometime in October.
That's just another reason I expect the G2 to be released when I do.

Man, I already have so many toys that I don't play with anymore as it is. The last thing I need is another one!
I hope they put off the release as long as they can.
I hate "Toy Envy" ! hehe ;-)

G2 is coming with 4,4 MP. My Dealer in Germany says, Canon gives Information after 15. August.

Just what we all need, more hot pixels in the CCD! Unless Canon has improved the failure rate, there'll be about 33% more hot and stuck pixels from this camera than the G1. I wonder if any of the real wishes for a new camera will be addressed? I doubt it, so will stick with G1 until I can afford a digital SLR. By the way, where is Pekka's D-30 gallery?

cheers,

PS, Im still very happy with the G1 despite the tone of this post.

I will side with Gandini in this debate.

I am happy with the G1 today, because I can get good results and work around some of the faults. I have tried to ride the evolution of the digital photo buying at each new release, ( 4 cameras to date) but I have decided to stop with the G1 for a while. It seems that there are always problems to be overcome with cutting edge equipment. The results that I am getting are excellent on the prints and I have yet to master all the settings of this camera, and I have not even started on the more advanced PS procedures.

Yeah, I would like to have a D30 with the lens and all. But I would be spending more time trying to figure out how to use the camera than taking photos. Right now I am taking lots and lots of shots, having fun, etc. Whenever the G1 runs its course and the advantage of the best digital camera for my use is easy to determine, then I will make the plunge. Hopefully that will be awhile.:)

The G2 is here. Released today. :)

Reviews here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canong2/ and here http://www.dcresource.com/

It looks good so far and will be compatible with my lensmate. :)

Wow! Upstaged again :)
Looks like they have fixed some of the problems and
not others. I like it though :)

G2 sure looks like another winner for Canon.

I started to write this reply with the thought that I'd not upgrade my G1 to G2, since it only has a fraction more pixels in the sensor, and the only real new features I thought It'd have were the histogram display and 10-bit colour RAW output.

This was the point I made the mistake of reading dpreview's review again, and I'm afraid my fingers were almost too fast compared to my senses.

There's really a lot more of little improvements, if dpreview's review is accurate (and in the past they have been the accuracy itself)

- Longest exposure time has been almost doubled to 15 seconds.
- Less chromatic aberration? Big news.
- New strap attachment points, now on both sides. For me, G1's implementation is really awkward.
- Distance display when focusing manually.
- AE lock.

I think I'm still keeping the G1... Not because I wouldn't like to upgrade it to G2, but because after all, G2 has still the same limitations as G1 in photographic sense... I think I'll at least try to save my little money for the D30...

I agree. If I were buying a new camera tomorrow, I'd get the G2, but I don't think it's worth the cost of selling my G1 and getting a new G2.

My G1 will continue to make me a happy camper until there's a camera in the same form factor and price as the G1 but with more "professional" features like the D30 (e.g., more bit depth, decent ISO1600 performance, interchangeable lenses, etc.). Maybe in another two years...

Not to mention the hassle it did take to get a G1 without dead or hot pixels in the sensor or LCD. Also, the G1 has proven itself - I don't have doubts about its abilities any more, and I'm familiar with its shortcomings.
Changing would mean building that base again from scratch, and I'd rather not spend the required two monts for that.

No doubt Canon got quite a lot of market share with G1. I am convinced that G2 will proudly continue that tradition.

It's now in "beta testing" stage, as it's now database based (MySQL + PHP, makes it easy to sort photos by shutter speed, select image sizes etc.) - I'll propably put it online next week.
