Hoooohooo! Got my new lens - EF 100-300mm f4.5-5.6 USM! I know, i know, it's not a L series or anything like that. But it's my first telephoto lens! Went out during lunch time to test it. Comment or advice welcome.

Personally I do not see anything wrong in the lens :) And the shoots are good enough for me. Have fun !

Looks nice. Sharp. A little dark. Did you push the shutter speed up to help with blur? What were your settings.

Shiiiaaaa, looks very good to me. But what do I know. I wen't out and bought the Canon 80-200 and that looks good to me too. I guess these are all good with plenty of light. My understanding is that we'll have trouble if we use these indoors with low light conditions like at sports games.

THanks Rob, Steibeldj.

Steibeldj, you are right. I notice they are a little dark. Maybe it was caused by the circular polarizer that i bought together with the new lens? I am not sure.

The setting for #1 is 1/125s, f5.6@300mm, ISO400, no exposure bias(compensation).

for #2 is 1/1000s, f5.6@300mm, ISO400, no exposure bias(compensation).

I know circular polarizer gives a more saturated result, but I don't know if that means it darkens the picture. Does anyone know the answer?

Very nice shots, better than I expected... the boken is a bit drab but other than that very nice job by this lens.

Howdy, mdm. You are right. It isn't for low light indoor shooting. So far, i mainly shoot ourdoor subjects, landscape and night scene.
How do you like your 80-200?

Thanks Fills. I suspect i turned the polarizer too much and caused the drab effect. I'll try it again w/o the polarizer and compare again.

Since it is my first telephoto lens, I am very happy with it. I mainly wanted it for my girls soccer games. I used it last weekend on a bright day and it took very nice pictures. I know the lens isn't considered good but I thought is was a nice start for me to get going. I took my shots in jpeg. I'm thinking next time to take them in raw in case any need adjusting.

Looks very good to me - I think that with the USM focusing, it will be a great lens for outdoor sports.

Hey cfc, apart from being bit dark as everyone mentioned, they look good to me, quite sharp at 300. Good luck with your new lens & keep the photos coming ;)

Now don't let that "I wonder how my pictures would look if I had an L lens" feeling get to you. I have a borrowed 100-300 NON usm lens with a scratched front glass from many years ago.

Here is the same shot with that lens and a 70-200 L lens. Apart from the focus being a bit off (operator error perhaps), there is not a huge amount of difference. The thing is got from this comparison is that the 'ordinary' lenses are very competent and not second class citizens of the Canon world. Hope that gives you confidence.

Don't worry too much about 'dark photo's' it's just a metering/polarizing/personal preference thing

I've noticed that model lens gives rather saturated colours by itself so have some fun experimenting to see what you like best :)

Hey is this the one that was at B&H for $169 ? I was going to grab it myself :):)

Blue_max i'm not surprised that it gives sharpness close to an L lens! After testing alot of lenses in this zoom range i've found it to be the best of the consumer zooms!

I will know alot more soon- i have a canon 100-300/5.6 L and tamron 70-300 LD (1:2) comming soon. The sigma 70-300 Apo macro super II came yesterday -not as good as i had been lead to believe :(

I will definitely have to get the 100-300 usm and compare them all to someone's L zoom before i start selling :(

Nice shots.....I think this will be my next purchase.

$280.00 at B&H ( is this the same one? )
