I shoot cars and urban life (occassionaly). Would a 420ex be all that I need? I don't and probably will never use anything above a 200mm, even that would be daytime. Just trying to figure out a good flash. I would appreciate any feedback! :p

Is your DRebel hacked? If not, you don't have FEC - and neither does the 420. For that reason I always recommend the Canon 550 (or the Sigma EF-500 DG Super) to DRebel owners. FEC is an absolute necessity for decent flash photography, IMO.

No it's not hacked. I'm still trying to find the file for it. What is fec? What does it do? Why should my DRebel be hacked in order to best use a 420ex?

it's Flash Exposure Compensation. It allows you to choose how powerful the flash is in comparison to ambient light. The 420ex doesn't have this control and Canon crippled the Digital Rebel firmware to disallow it. The hacked version opens up this option and works great. It voids your warranty, but I did it about 6 months ago and have only had a positive experience.

I would spend the extra and either get a used 550 or a new 580..

Don't risk having a $800 doorstop

just my $0.03

The hack doesn't void your warranty
