Suggestions on the setup. Someone (not me) has a physics class ...

i would try different angles of course and bracket shutter speeds. i would shoot some straight down the neck..from the bottom and top bridges..etc..
share some pics when you get a chance ..
i might try some too tonight and try and post them...

You'll need a flash set at partial power for freezing action.....

Sounds like a very fast multiple firing strobe would be in order. I presume you want to capture the string at its as it travels through its motion and make it appear to have stopped multiple times. The 580EX can do multi-strobe firings, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be fast enough. And a bass guitar might be easier as the frequency of vibration would be slower particularly on the lower note strings.
