Having a good time at the bowling alley with dragging the shutter. Av mode, i think f/16, with the 420ex on the Digital Rebel. These are from a while ago, but the technique came up in discussion recently and reminded me of these. Thanks for looking!

Nice effect, I love dragging the shutter. More often than not, I get surprised b\y the results. By the way, isn't flash photography frowned upon in bowling alleys?

Not when the owner is a friend, and the pitchers of Budweiser are flowing free!

Leaving the shutter open a little longer than usual. Then usually you pop the flash with the 2nd curtain, which means the flash fires immediately b4 the shutter closes

I understand the concept but am having a little difficulty figuring out how to actually "shutter drag". What do I actually have to do? Sorry, I'm kind of a visual and hands on learner.
Like all of the shots, especially the first.

It is quite easy... press your finger on the shutter and then immidiately shake your camera like a bartender till the flash fires... Dont forget to set the flash to fire in 2nd curtain.
The amount of dragging effect will be determined from your movement and the camera speed. The longer your speed is you could even paint with light... ;)

Have fun...
