By the lens...

Is it ok to hold your 20D by the lens sometimes? I mean like when you're taking it out of the bag and you grab it by the lens?

Yes. I wouldn't swing it around by the lens on a regular basis, but what you describe will not hurt it.

I prefer to pick mine up at the base of the lens than by the camera body, especially for larger lenses.

You never know...grab by the base.

Cameras are made strong enough to be carried this way-it happens all the time when the camera is attached to a large lens
