View Full Version : The 70-200mm f/4 IS USM L to be discontinued...??

So today I was in Ted's (a photography retail chain in Australia) and when they looked up the store price for the 70-200mm f/4 IS it came up with "RUNOUT". She said this doesn't mean they need to order more stock, rather it is going to be discontinued and perhaps replaced with another model.

Now I'm not saying Ted's is the bastion of truth and accuracy but it seems to me they'd want to get information regarding such a popular lens right given it is accessed by 20 odd stores around Australia.

Can anyone confirm or deny this is the case? Is the 70-200mm going to be replaced by another model?

Doubtful. It's one of the newest lenses in the lineup (relatively speaking) and is rather a good seller :p

Canon are currently winding up production of the 24-70mm, 70-200mm and 100-400mm lenses, as they are scheduled to be replaced by this lens:

Nice info...I was looking through this and I thought "Wow, I wonder how much this miracle lens is going to cost."

And then I reached the bottom. Wow. Stopping production of the 7-200 f/4L would be like Mercedes not making the C class anymore because everyone wants a CL.

It's the best zoom they make and is pretty new, so the answer is no ... IMO!

Wow, is that lens still a rumor or is it actually the real deal. I'd gander it would cost upwards of 3K, but that seems like a very nice piece of equipment.

On another note, I doubt Canon will discontinue their current line of lenses, not everyone will be able to afford this ultimate lens. I just purchased a 70-200 F4 myself and am very happy with it.

Wow that lens is estimated to cost 2800 Pounds! That's like 7000 AUD!

I think you may be right. Thinking a bit more about this it's possible they meant to put "runout" on the non IS version which would make more sense I guess since that lens is 10 years old now.

Of course it's real! Here's a photo I took with it just recently:

Poor image quality, I know, but it was a fleeting shot...

I took this last night with the new IO lens at 400mm f/22 with three stacked x2 teleconverters and heavily cropped, so pardon the quality:

I wonder if it's related to the Star Wars project they've been talking about for the past 30 years? Looks like an early prototype of something...

did you ask them if they would be on special then?

As a rule, Ted's don't do specials. I only walk in there to find out what an unreasonable price would be.
