For those as confused as I was by this, he's talking about the onOne app for iPhone (http://www.ononesoftware.com/detail.php?prodLine_id=38), which allows you to use your phone to control a tethered Canon camera.
From the site:
Here's what you need:
* Your Canon EOS DSLR camera
(view list of compatible cameras)
* Your Apple iPhone or iPod Touch
* A WiFi enabled computer (no active internet connection required)
* DSLR Camera Remote Server software (free download)
* DSLR Camera Remote Professional OR DSLR Camera Remote Lite software for iPhone/iPod Touch, available from the Apple iTunes Store.
Buy DSLR Camera Remote Professional ($9.99 intro price)
Buy DSLR Camera Remote Lite ($1.99)

But how do you connect to the DSLRs, Did not the 5D have a "Print/PTP - Pc conect that allowed for wifi connection?? Im wondering if after buying this app do I have to fork out another 300 for a WFT e1????

No, but you do need to be tethered to a WiFi enabled computer.

I bought this earlier and did a quick live-view demo

Basically, there is a mac/win server app which detects the camera. You tether the camera via USB to the machine you need. Then you connect via WiFi your iPhone/iPod touch to the laptop/computer using either network you have or setup an ad-hoc connection.
The app is incredibly responsive, live-view is REAL-TIME no lag... great frame rate.
For the price at the moment its one of the best iPhone apps i've ever bought.

It just feels like that if you are in the studio or working with your laptop as well you could take the photo no probs. but if you set the camera up on an event you dont wanna set up your laptop as well having all the kids running by trying to play games etc.... it seems as a long shot until the OnOne guys come up with a "plug-play" dongle to the camera.

The main idea is you can walk around with your iphone and make adjustments and see the change as you make it. You are not tied to a computer sitting on a desk--- look at screen walk over to light --make adjustment- go back to computer--- go back to light again and again. Or for adjusting your product with out leaving the shooting table To look through the camera or at the computer. This is how I am useing it anyway, as a remote preview before the shot.

I've played with it just a tiny bit. With a longer USB-cord this could be useful (the cord that comes with the camera it way too short).
So cable hooked up to the camera and computer, the iPhone connected wirelessly to the computer running the DSLR Remote app and the computer runs the "server. It's some info on their website how to set up a private wireless network iphone / computer.
The videos on how to set things up and use the software: http://www.ononesoftware.com/tutorials/tutorials_dslr.php

I may be wrong, but I don't think you need a wifi enabled computer. I imagine the computer simply needs to be on the same network, whther this be by Ethernet, wifi or ad hoc wifi.
It does do anything the eos utility can't, but it gives you a bit more freedom. Those who don't think this is useful simply don't have the needs for it. For example, what if you are into self portraits? This can be handy as a portable screen. Also for back yard birding - you can hide inside and just observe until the moment is right.

Couldn't you use Wireless USB Dongle (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=695676) in conjunction with the OnOne software? Complete wireless? DSLR to Computer via USB Dongle and Computer to iPhone for control of the camera.. right?

Tortri, I'm sure that's possible, as long as you have contact with the computer with the iPhone (wiFi I'm guessing is the only thing working, not bluetooth), as well as the camera has contact with the computer.

No, it wont work that way. You need a computer to be running the server software. The server software is what is actually running the camera. The Client on the iphone is simply a display for the server. The client in the iphone cant communicate directly with the camera without going through the server.

I don't know anything about the Wireless USB Dongle. However, if the device makes both the computer and camera appear to be connected by USB, then I would say yes it would work. The OnOne server running on the computer communicates to the camera via USB; the OnOne client (iPhone/iPod) uses wireless to communicate to the server. As long as the camera and computer "think" they are talking via the USB -- it should work. But I don't know if the USB Dongle works that way. It just may be like a USB wireless card . . .that won't work.

Picked it up last week as well. Mainly because the price is right at the moment more so than having a real need at the moment. I've test drove it and works as sold, very cool little app.

Just making sure...... Are you running the Canon software at the same time? It does not need the Eos utility running. Just plug it in and start the OnONe server software. If you have the Canon software set to open automatically... then close it before you try to start the server. I did this the first time. I started the Utility then the server and nothing.... Then per chance really I started the server with out the EOs software and it worked!

It was only $9.99 as an inrtoductry offer. I had to pay $19.99 2 weeks after it came out. I could not get it while out of the country when it was released.
The product manager had an interview on a pod cast I heard last week...He mentioned there will be focus controll in live view mode. And a way to set it to take HDR in a number of ways. And a few other things I cant think of at the moment.
There is a lot more detail on the website....http://www.ononesoftware.com/blog/

It is up to Apple. It was submitted to them for aproval on the 5th. But Apple does not promise a time frame. It totally depends on the amount of apps to be approved. Could be 2 days could be 2 months.

the update looks good - too bad apple's approval process sucks.
i have v.1 and set it up recently with a wireless usb connection. You still need to have the usb connector and power source dangling from the camera, but it eliminates the physical tether to a computer and worked up to about 30' away. It's a cool little program.

Not your fault at all. You probably heard bad info from other sorces like I did. I heard it and didnt double check it, and then went on to check iTunes 2 times a day looking for the update... 2 weeks later I decided to look into it and found the blog entry the same day I heard the interview and found out the real story.

I bought the $1.99 version, which just triggers the camera with no exposure control. I like the function, and will probably buy the pro version at some point. Might be more helpful with kids, but I generally like to shoot camera in hand tethered anyway. Using this, I'd have to shoot tripod....

I was about to buy this, but they state on the web site that the software will not do "bulb" mode with a 20D or 30D and a few others. I guess I am going to have to upgrade my body in order to get all of the features of this app to work :)
FWIW - In the compatibility part of the site they state that they will work with either firewire or USB, depending on body capabilities.

I am tempted to try this but I would prefer an Iphone/touch application that allows direct connection to the camera with no PC. If only the touch had a video input cable then you could just use it as a monitor .

I'm not sure where to post this, so I'll try here. anyone using Lightroom plugin Timothy Armes Mogrify? I used to have the watermark function, but after installing the DSLR remote, it no longer watermarks my lightroom exports. Coincidence? I'll also check the plugin for updates when I get home.

Now that developers have access to be able to use the Dock for anything, I bet there will be something like this on the market sooner or later. The biggest problem is the cable I think. A mini USB to iPhone 50 pin connecter will be a single porpose cable and will make it expensive.

1. Video stream could be sent from Cam, DIRECTLY, to iPhone-3G/3Gs for viewing, via WiFi or direct-cable connection.
2. Video stream arriving to iPhone 3Gs could be ENCODED directly in iPhone, thus producing an .MPEG2/4/VC-1/AVC file that we could later download and break-up in pieces on video-editing.
The quality of video coming out of some cams (like 1D/1Ds3) is a quasi-HD interlaced (I believe) frame of 1024x68x pixels, which is quite better than anything SD can do.
If that comes out, I will buy two (2) licenses/kits instantly, and would immediately enable my 1D3 and 40D bodies with Live-video (!)

There are programs that will capture the video already for computers. Im not sure how handy it would be on a iPhone. But I guess the on board editing may make it handy. How good is the video editing on the 3GS?

The thread linked above, someone else used this power source:

it has an on/off switch and leds to show power level, which is nice.
Hope that helps
