Need help with post processing osprey with fish

I am having a heck of time doing post processing on a osprey with a fish. i tried auto in photoshp cs3 and it makes it wayyyyyyy to dark. so I revert it back to the original trying to do it myself but i cant seem to get a handle on how to do it. attached is a photo of one and it just dont look right to me. if anyone has a url that i can go to too read on things like this please give it to me. i ant the ospreys eyes to shot but i would also like the fish to show a bit more. what can i do to make it better and more clear please help

consider making a selection and PP the foreground and background separately

what you mean consider making a selection and post process the background seperatley i have no idea how to do that....lol sorry
