What would you recommend?

I saw a photo recently that a screw on infrared filter was used and it sparked my interest. I've looked on BHphoto's website and the price for a 77mm Infrared filter jumps all over the place. From as little as $50 up to $500. All the previews of what they do, on bh's site, are the same sample image. I can't not judge which is better or worse. My budget is more on the tight side but would like to know if anyone here has one and their opinions on it.

This is the search results on BH for "77mm" and "infrared":
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=77mm+infrared&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2Fproduct.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&Go.x=26&Go.y=12&Go=submit

Or if you have another recommendation I am all ears.

Thanks.

The $52 B+W filter is for colour IR; it only blocks the blue-green part of the spectrum. Bac in the day, we used to use a Wratten 12 Yellow filter. The B+W 039, 489 and True-Cut 750 filters block IR light. It's the exact opposite of what you want. The Tiffen #87, B+W 093 (087C) and Hoya RM90 are all essentially the same. The others will pass dark red as well as IR light. The B+W 092's pictures and write-up sound contradictory; the photo is more accurate if you check the B+W (Schneider) site - it passes extreme red as well as IR.

Thank you Jon. I will check out their site. For the record, the photo I saw used a Hoya RM72 filter.

I have both the Tiffen and Hoya R72 size 77mm and a Hoya 58mm if you want me to test anything.

I tried 3 stops , didn't work . This was with a 55 mm r-72 . An adapter from 52 mm to 55mm on my 50 - 1.8 mk 1 [ metal mount ] .I don't remember the setting . Just that I took a reading without R-72 , backed off 3 stops , screwed on , set lens to infinity used a timer - I think it was 3 seconds but can't remember . Yes , it was on a tripod .
I found a 55mm r-72 yesterday when sorting filters but have not played with yet .

With an unmodified DSLR, try around 15 seconds and bracket. That's on a bright, sunny day. Your sensor has an IR-cutoff filter on it that's intended to prevent IR light from affecting the exposure.
