I have a Canon A80 - prob about 5-6 yo. It recently started to intermittently give greatly overexposed pix and now does nothing else. It happens on Auto and Programme. It seems to set up the exposure & aperture ok, but then when taking pic, there's no obvious 'click' and it comes out all white or just washed out, as though the shutter isn't opening/closing correctly. It still works for indoor flash photography, but I assume this is working on the duration of the flash.

Is there anything I can do to fix it, or is it time for a new camera?

cheers Mike

There is no shutter on the A80, however it is possible the aparture is not stopping down to shoot. This is what makes the mechanical click sound.

To test this, put the camera in AV mode, and set the aparture at its widest (F2.8 with the lens zoomed right out, full wide).

If the photos look ok, then set the aparture to F8 and try again.

Tried that. Initially it wouldn't go below F4.9 but did after turning off/on. All setting still washed out (and no clicky noise). Tried very short shutter speed on Manual that indicated underexpose, but still washed out result.

Is this likely to be a software or hardware fault i.e. prob not worth the cost of fixing so is it worth taking apart?

Sounds like not worth the cost, but I doubt you'd be able to fix it yourself either. Canon might offer a trade-up in lieu of repair if you sent it in, but I couldn't say what that might be.
