So I take a lot of pictures for my fraternity for our events and my one brother approached me and asked if I could take some head shots of him for his auditions.

I have never done any portraits or anything like that, so I was wondering if anyone could provide me with tips, advices, links, or whatever that could give me decent head shots. Thanks in advance!

Assuming you can get a flash off-camera, put it ~45 degrees to one side and 45 above, and use something white as a reflector on the opposite side. If not, I guess shoot in portrait and bounce the flash off the ceiling (if possible), angled slightly towards him. There might be a better method, but you can at least start there and experiment.

Stand about five feet away and fill the lens with his head....frame, focus, fire!

So when I do a headshot, it's literally a headshot. In other words, I'm not shooting his mid waist and above. Does the background matter? Pose? Formal or informal etc.

Headshots are generally from the chest up

Here are the ones I did. They are pretty easy because you really don't have to change the setup at all. These were shot w/ 40D and Sigma 70-200. Subject was 6' from background. Had one AB800 set as main light at 90 degrees to camera right and another AB800 set by the camera for fill.
