I'm actually trying to get away from using feeders. I find that most of my birds prefer the seeds just put out in the open, either on the ground, or an old table I have in the yard, or a post with a log slab I have screwed to the top. Community feeders cause disease eventually, especially in the finches, and I have done away with all those but the sock feeder for Niger seed and I wash that a lot.

The problem with feeding on the ground is that it can attract rats (I'm watching one now - obviously the rat-man's magic potion didn't work too well). Still, the ground-feeders also attract one of the local foxes. She played her part in lowering the local rat population last week. Shame I didn't have my camera to hand.
But you're right about disease. Regular cleaning and disinfecting of hanging feeders is essential.

No rats or foxes here to be a problem. I do have a possum who is not destructive and cleans up the stuff on the ground, and a racoon who is going to meet his demise as soon as I can catch him destroying my pole feeder platform. He can't knock it down, but he can hit it enough to make the grape jelly log on top to fall off. He has also gotten into my suet before and cleans it out.

Easy and excellent for all birds is a piece of plywood, drill holes( small) so water can drain, use 1/4 " dowels for the sides on frame. This is uncovered, and I use it all year.I have it ontop of an arbour.but you could raise it anywhere, custom make it for your yard or space.
