I was walking through the local park and came across this shopping cart near the edge of the skate bowl. I did not like the colour version as it was washed out due to the angle of the sun, so I shifted to black and white. Please tell me what you think of the adjustments, and composition. The second image was of the bowl as well. I cropped a bit,, increased detail, saturation, contrast, and black levels to delete detail in the shadow. Again, please give me some feedback as I am just getting back into photography after being away from it for about 20 years?
Both images are shot with my Sigma lens:
B&W Image: ISO 400/ 26mm/ f5.6/ 1/4000sec
Colour Image: ISO 400/ 18mm/ f22/ 1/250sec

Haha I'd be so tempted to push in that trolley! Love the colours in #2. Pity the shadow is there!

I thought the shadow added something to the photo, but not enough so it remains a little ambiguous. Thanks for the comments, though!

Don't get me wrong, it looks very interesting with or without the shadow! Any more pics of the skate park?

Jealous shopping cart considers career change...?
ISO 100 would probably be okay too. and why f22?

I have more photos of the skate park, but none I felt that were as compelling.

To be honest, I didn't put that much thought into fstop, except to try to keep a larger focal plane instead of a shallower one. What would you have done (or suggest) for f-stops, and why? Remember that I am coming into this whole photography thing after being away from it for eons. I am enjoying it, though, and can't wait to learn more about my 40D's potential etc, as well as my lenses limitations. I actually wish I had a wide angle (10-22) for this series so i could have gotten the whole sket bowl in on the shot! Funds are limited, though, and I value my marriage : )

I would think that f11 or so would give you enough DOF for that image, your lens likely has its sweet spot around F8. As for the ISO may as well shoot the ISO that will give you the least noise if you have the light availible.
The 10-22mm is amazing, so much fun once you learn to use it. Keep your eyes open for the sigma 10-20, its almost as good!

I have been doing so much reading online, and you are absolutely right! What can I say, but the learning curve is going to be there for me. Thanks for the input! I would love to get the Sigma 10-22. My friend bought one and he is loving it! Most likely that will be my next purchase. Cheers!
