The barriers to starting a photography business virtually disappeared with the dawn of affordable digital SLR cameras and software like Photoshop. If you're skilled in taking great pictures, pick a niche and build a business around it. You might want to shoot weddings, bar mitzvahs, or corporate events. Or consider family or individual portraits. You could even set up a small studio space in your home. Consider what services you'll offer clients beyond just taking pictures—can you build a Web page to showcase the photos of their event as well?

First steps: Put together a portfolio of your existing work to show potential clients.

Time needed: For event photography, expect most gigs to be on weekends or evenings (galas, for example). You may be able to arrange portrait appointments on a more flexible schedule.

Average sales: $26,259, based on Economic Census data.

It does say "if you are skilled at taking pictures"

I'm an IT guy and I don't view guys that fix computers or handle SMB accounts on the side with disdain. It's a free market. If someone can provide a service for a profit, they have every right.

I agree with you on the free market part. Too many people love the free market to help them get their share, but seem to want it shut down for others coming in behind them.

As far as the "skilled at taking pictures" part, too many people are not but are influenced into thinking they are by friends and family that rave about what great pictures they take. Then again, sometimes good marketing works better than good skill.

Quite true. I've seen several photographers who would probably rate as above average but definitely not outstanding or spectacular by any means who did quite well with agressive and creative marketing.
I've also seen quite a few very talented individuals who never made it out of their basement, spare room, or garage studio because they simply had no idea how to market their business.

Too funny! Many are way out of date . . . and #33 and #34 are the same, so only 98 suggestions there . . .
