Ok. So I have been very busy and not with photography:oops:. However, I have my lil ol 430 ex and my new PW to fire them remote. I will be getting a soft box kit soon.
For now, I want a 5-1 reflector I think. I think that this would help a lot with facial shadows etc. I have heard a lot about rectangular ones with grips and the usual round flexible ones.
Can you guys recommend decent reflectors please. Most shots will be outdoors using sunlight and flash for fill. thanks

any auto parts store will have windshield reflectors and shades. they cost about 5.00. you can find gold/silver colored ones that work great. i have a 5 in 1 disc for fill in faces but the car reflector works alot better in alot of applications.
there are alot good alternatives including white foam boards at home depot, plain white poster board. i was reading a post on model mayhem where some guys were using pringle cans for snootsbw!.
i would suggest searching strobist for ideas. i think im done buying reflectors.there is alot of stuff to use for minimal costs.

I took 1 white and 1 black foam core boards and 1 windshield reflector and cut the winshield reflector into 2 pieces and glued them to one side of each foamboard and that gave me 1 silver/white and 1 silver/black reflectors..
Cheap and very usefullllll!

Pringles cans, cereal boxes, all viable snoots in my opinion. Only reason I don't use them is the portability issue.

I have to agree about the windshield reflectors. I picked that tip up from another shooter, and about two days later I went to the car wash to wash my truck and someone had tossed one. I eventually got an actual reflector, but the windshield reflector did me a good job for a while!

Amen! Resourcefulness is key!

Well, for my particular case.....unless I can find something else I need...I have a gift card for B&H I need to use. So I was thinking of picking up my reflector//

white is better than shiny foil...Have you ever had to squint into the reflection of the bright sun with a shiny one?! my eyes are watering just thinking about it!
And unless you have an assistant to hold the reflector just as the shot is being taken, dealing with reflectors is a big pain.

hmmmm....some valid points there. Well, I may find out that this 50.00 might not be the best spent....

For a snoot use a beer koozie cut the bottom out and slide it over the speedlight instant snoot for a couple bucks and you still can use it for a beer after the shoot. LOL

5 in 1 reflector is what it says - 5 colored reflector, and each color is designed for a particular application. When collpased it is very small and can fit in the camera bag. It is surprisingly cheap so I always wonder why anyone would mess with the car shades that are designed for a completely different purpose, with a foamcore unless the shoot is in studio, with projector screens etc etc.
A specialized screen was probably the most painless purchase of all the gear I have.

mmm: I have two that booth a year back from Latolite. I cant say it was a bad or good choice: in their place I wish I had one big one from SunBounce.

My 5-1 from B&H arrived. I like it so far. It does fit nicely in the small sleeve it came with...though after 3 attempts, I cannot fold it back in yet! I have not played to much with it due to rain. But a 2 minute test in the back yard proved well with the silver and gold sides. HOPEFULLY, will test this Sunday at Fort Story.

White acoustical celing tiles are another inexpensive and excellent re-purposed reflector. I want portability and purchased two different sizes of the round fold-up versions and have been very happy with them.
