Does anyone know why this is a custom funciton? Is it better to leave it on or off?

Try it out ....

Of course it has higher ISO noise than 1600, but you have to decide if it is worth it for you.

Best regards,

I set mine up to use it. Here's one from that day......just messing around.

Oh and BTW, this is even sharpend, and still the noise it not that bad. I would not think twice about shooting at 3200 if I really had to.

Yeah, nothing wrong with giving it a try if needed (low light, no flash). Why is it a custom function? Don't know ... perhaps Canon is not entirely satisfied with its performance and is trying to discourage its use.

I know that 3200 gives you more noise. I am just wondering why this is an option.

I figure that it's better than nothing and if it's turned off, then nothing may be the result. It doesn't hurt of have it on.

Whats cool about 3200 is if you turn your print in to a BW print it gives it a old feeling try it

Why do alot of people insist on calling the 20D a D20??????????????????????????????????????

 hehehe, old traditions are hard to overcome: D30, D60...

I still confuse my D30 with a 30D sometimes :o .

I have ISO3200 turned on -- just in case I need it. It's still better than jumping through the menu if you require it just NOW -- no, 2 seconds ago -- no, oh darn, I missed that picture!!!:(

Since the color noise at ISO 3200 is so much greater than at 1600, they do not want some beginner to stumble into that setting and then complain that their camera will not produce good results. By making it a custom function, you won't get there purely by accident.

My 20D, at ISO 3200 is equal to my wife's S2 Pro at 800ISO.
