I just received my 50d with the 28-135mm lens that came in kit last week and my daughters have a dance recital this week in a dark theater and cant use flash.
I am learning very quickly but still wanted to know what people think the best type settings would be for this that have been shooting much longer then me.
Thanks for any recommendations!

Really, even if you had an f/1.8, the dof would be so shallow that it'd be tough to get decent images. In a very dim situation without flash, your only choice is to crank up the ISO and try to get 1/60th+ and f/4+ with a steady grip. Good luck!

If you have a place where you can rent some glass I would look at 85mm f1.8, 135mm f2.0, 70-200mm mm f2.8 or bigger guns like 200mm f1.8 or the 200mm f2. Without those, I would just sit and enjoy the show.

Av mode, ISO3200, f/5.6, and pray that your shutter speed is fast enough :)

if you have the possibility of staying near a 50mm f/1.8 is a good solution.
Clearly the 85mm f1.8 is also good but it's more expensive.
