I love the sky. The tilt is distracting (even if correct, looking at the structure on the left), and I'd love to see all of the tree at the right.

I was going for a dark, brooding look. It is a little off anti-clockwise. I'll fix that.

I would brighten up the tree a bit so it stands out more. Otherwise the sky looks excellent.

On this monitor at work the photo looks under exposed. The clouds have the dramatic HDR look, but everything else just looks dark.
I believe the purpose of HDR is to have an image that is evenly exposed throughout. I understand the processing of the image is up to the person, but I would of thought this image was posted in the wrong section if you had not stated, "HDR or going for the dark look".
I think the image would really be nice if it had more exposure. I would like to see it pp'ed again if you have time

so how would one make the tree come our with a nice HDR look, but still keep the dark theme?

Ummmmmm...
If you want a dark, brooding scene, why do an HDR?! Just crank up the contrast and play with curves.

Ah, I knew this shot was taken in Aust! Love the trees. Very dark and mysterious shot.

I really like this shot. You have a real nice mix between a realistic look and the cartoony HDR look. I think it's too dark overall though. You could do some overall curves or only curves on individual areas with a layer mask.
