I just installed the new firmware and was reading on this

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dmk2/data/movie-ib-jec.pdf

it says that it's recommended to use shutter speed of 1/30 when shooting moving objects. The faster the shutter speed the more choppy it is?

Does anyone know why that happens? I always thought the faster the shutter speed on video, the smoother the video would be.

At 30 frames per second, a 1/30 exposure will observe all motion occurring before the lens. Shorter shutter times will only capture more brief segments of the action, resulting in choppy motion.

If it helps, do 2 second bursts in Tv mode at 1/10, and another at 1/100, both while panning. The longer shutter bursts will smear together, and the shorter ones will chop.

Most of what I heard says to keep it around 1/50 or 1/60 for exposure time. I don't know much about video so I just read Cinema5D.com and DVInfo.net for info. You can use faster shutter speeds for effect, like the beginning of "Saving Private Ryan."

that's interesting info, thanks!
