Hey guys,

There is a photo expo. this month and I don't think there is going to be any prizes awarded. I believe this is a way to show off your work and get noticed by either amateurs or pro. My question is that I have this great picture I took and I don't have a model release. I don't plan on selling it or making anything back from it, so in this case do I still need a release?

I read the "When Do I Need A Release" and it mentions that one is needed when I plan on selling the picture. Here is the image for those interested ;)..

I don't plan on making any money from it. I just wanted to display it at the photo expo.

You don't need a release as long as you are not using them to advertise or sell a product or service or advertise in anyway. For display and to sell as artwork no release needed.

Really? So you can sell candid stuff without permission? That's good to know!

It depends. If you are selling to an individual as fine art for example, you don't need a release. If you are selling 2,000 as posters, you most likely will. There is a line somewhere between them, but that line isn't documented clearly anywhere. If it was, the lawyers couldn't argue it out in court at $250 an hour, and we wouldn't want that now would we :)

Things are also different between the UK and US, so be sure the information is accurate to your locale.
