The fact that you can use so many different lenses on the the 20D, as opposed to the one that comes permanently attached to the the Pro 1 should be enough to make this choice. I say go for it!

I wouldn't go into debt to buy the 20D. The 20D probably costs a fair bit more than the pro1, then you have to buy lenses, lots of memory, tripods, etc, to make perfect pictures. I'd think better to get an all in one package with the pro-1 now, and upgrade to an SLR system once you graduate and can afford to buy it without going into debt. A pro-1 will take nice pictures.

A 20D with some lenses/flash is about 6-8 times as much money as a Pro1. I have a G6 (similar to the Pro1) and it takes outstanding pictures, uses RAW, Digic2, 7.2 Megapixel, 4x zoom, full manual, a hot shoe, even the same battery as the 20D, but it's a totally different animal. My G6 was about $500, I'm in to at least $4,000 for my 20D with lenses, flashes, case, memory, etc. Heck, there are some SLR lenses (and lenses ONLY) in excess of $5,000.

The 20D can do much cleaner high ISO photos... At ISO 400, you're hard pressed to see any noise at all.. It just starts showing up at ISO 800. The Pro1 has very noticeable noise at ISO 400.
As TIm says.. I wouldn't go into debt to buy a 20D either.. You can't realize the full potential of the camera if you just have it and the kit lens.. And as Pb2Au says... To really appreciate a good DSLR, you need to spend at *least* an extra $1500.00 on lenses and a decent flash.

Get an XT!!! Or better yet, a used 10D.............don't break the bank on the body, break the bank on the lens..............And BTW, the image you get from a DSLR is a hundred times better than the images you will get from the pro1.

Maybe you should read my first post - the cost of the camera, while significant, pales in comparison to the cost of the lenses and other accessories.
100X is overstating things. In most circumstates the picture the DSLR will be a bit better, in challenging circumstances it'll be a lot better, but it's never going to be 100X better.

Monkey. What's different? Gosh. Shutter release responsiveness! Go a store. press shutter of ANY and ALL digicams. Wait...... moment is lost, car zoomed by, runner's back in dugout, kid's now craying not laughing, girlfriend in bored. Press shutter release of an SLR. Then you'll know. Buy a used Canon 10D. There wonderful rugged cameras. Jack

Well I have both those cameras and I have taken some beautiful, clear shots with my Pro1...and I will continue to use it. Don't go into debt to buy the 20D. Maybe you would want to buy the A95 and stick some money away towards the 20D & gear in the future. If I was to buy a P&S to stick in my purse, it would be the A95. Also, the price is down on the Pro1 so if you've been happy with it, get another one.

Hmm, you imply that you're a student. Will the camera be an important part during your academics? When I was a dental student, intraoral, full-face and portrait shots were important for case presentations, but I was lucky enough to be able to borrow cameras with macro lenses. Maybe you would have the same opportunity.
But if you are going into photo journalism or something similar, you might want to think to invest a little bit more into photographic gear (especially lenses), which could be used in the future after graduation as well (while you're paying off your student loans ;)).

You're comparing two completely different animals, with a HUGE price difference (once lenses are factored in). And "better" can be defined a dozen different ways!
If you've any interest in sports/moving subjects, then the Pro1 is a non-starter. It zooms and focusses far too slowly. If your budget and aspirations can be met by a top-end compact or bridge camera, then look at the 'G' series over the Pro1:- at least its equal, and cheaper.
The DSLR route will give you much more scope, but a 20D system will hammer a student loan!Instead of the 20, why not look at a 300 at a run-out price, or the new 350? The 350 will give you most of what the 20D has, but cheaper.

A 2nd hand 300D with a Tamron 28-75 lens will be cheap, and better than the Pro-1. Maybe that's worth considering? Really though, don't go into debt for camera gear, unless you need it for your course.

I totally agree with Tim. If the money is an issue... get a used DRebel or 10D and the tamron lens.

Take a look at this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=49026).
You might have seen this thread already in the G series forum, it discusses basically the same question, just with the G6 as other option to the 300D. What is said there is very valid and most likely most informative for your decision.

Andy

thankyou all for the replies i will need a decent camera for my photography course the only reason i didnt suggest the 300D or 350D is that you lot give the 20D such a high rating and why buy somethin that is still quite expensive when you can go all out and buy the best??? im going to be doing a Photography degree which would be the reason on the upgrade and as for what im going to be using the camera for is not known yet its gonna be used for a wide range of things will the 350D do that???
