"First time caller" under husband's log in name so bare w/me as new at this "forum" thing.

Question, we were approached about supplying one of our images for a children's book, come to find out, it's a "for profit" type company. As a full time worker and "part time "paid & gift" photographer", I "admittedly" became enthralled at the idea of having our name in print outside of articles/pictures submitted for newspapers for work or "volunteer non-profit organizations", my mistake! They are now wanting "several" images, have not responded yet as wanted to get an idea of rates to pitch from anyone whose had similar experiences with having their images displayed in popular children's books.

I have always explained to people who've complained about "Professional Photographer's Rates" the grueling process they go through to earn their well-earned money so please, no head bashing here, just straight up advice if you can assist, Thanks!

You should charge what YOU think they are worth. Sounds vague, I know, but anything more, they may not pay, anything less, you'll regret it forever...

And congrats! :-)

Ask them what their budget is and see if you can come up with something that fits.

Maybe try to track down one of their books' illustrators and get their advice on their experiences with them.

I used to start out with the " what is your budget" approach but it is pretty much a waste of time. They will state some super low number or photo credit. I use a few different sites to figure prices. Try this free one. http://stockphotopricecalculator.com/

Thanks y'all for the advice and link, will check out the calculator, sounds interesting and informative.

We did find out they are only going to use one photo so will have to chalk this up to experience. At least our 4 year old daughter will get a book as a keepsake and can one day be proud that Mommy and Daddy's work made it in something :). Will know better next time we are approached and will be better prepared for negotiations!

Thanks Again,
Jeanie
