View Full Version : A plea to Sports section posters

The moderators can toss this in the bin if they want, but I would like to express some opinions regarding what is effecting my enjoyment of this particular section of the forums.

It says SPORTS, but there are increasingly more pictures of cars parked in diveways or attempts at advert style arty car/bike pictures, none of which have anything to do with sport, other than it may be a vehicle with an engine. I know you may want to show off your pride and joy, but here IMHO is not the right place.

Thread hi-jacking. It is OK to a point, but it is now becoming a bit too much. Someone starts a post expecting comments on their pictures and ends up with hordes of other images tagged into the thread. All this does is deter those people with less than broadband from reading it.

If this turns into a forum of parked car and arty shots of BMW's, then goodnight from me.

Rant mode off - I am entitled to one now and again.

I'm relatively new here, but I agree with Kenny. Too many parked cars and artsy pictures in the sports section. Maybe, if there's enough interest in this, there could be a sub-forum, or another foum exclusively for cars & bikes thats meant for artsy pictures ?

Well I could be wrong, but wouldn't these car shots be better posted in the Still Life section.

They're not moving are they?

Pekka has indicated that he intends to create a 'trasportation' forum sometime in the future. That would be the appropriate place for non-sporting automobile photos (as well as trains, planes, boats, etc.)

I would expect that racing photos would still belong in the sports forum, but that would require some education. In the meantime, the description of the Sports thread is Cars, bikes, boats, grannies --- anything that moves fast

----and that is contributing to the confusion.

It's going to be sorted out fairly soon. Patience. Patience.

I think we should come up with a simple rule of thumb: If it's a motorcycle or car that is moving, it belongs in "Sports", and if it's a motorcycle or car that is not moving, it should go in "Transportation".

Simple, easy to remember, and makes perfect sense.

i feel your pain, the people section of this forum is filled with nothing but baby pictures, bad ugly looking avatars and literally a paragraph on peoples equipment. People getting too caught up on pixels and taking real badly composed pictures

Errr.... so transportation doesn't move? and a race car on the grid waiting for the start belongs in "transportation"?

It's easy enough to tell whether something belongs in sports or any other category... a little bit of common sense is all that's required.

I agree with Ken. Too many "non-sports" car and bike images in the sports section nowadays.

It is very straight forward.

If the vehicle (of any type) is taking part in, or is prepared ready to take part in a competitive event then that is fair game for "Sports".

Any other vehicle goes in the "Transportation" forum.

See, that wasn't hard, was it ? :)

But until such time as the Transportation forum becomes live, "Sports" *is* the place for vehicles according to the forum descriptions.

What about a car show? It is often a competition. Of course unlike a race which is dynamic and atheletic in nature the car ahow is static. They are a different nature.
I think Pekka has the right idea and until then it is up to us as posters to use better judgement as to the classification of our photos.

I can't believe I have to say this, but...

Obviously there could be exceptions to this. And obviously, common sense must be applied.

I stand corrected. Ian better described what I was trying to convey.

So, pictures of cars prior to the start of a race should go in transportation, but shots taken after the race has started can go into sports. Maybe a reference comment directing viewers to a different forum base upon their desire to see pre-race and post-race photos. It's beginning to make sense to me now!

i do agree, to a certain extent. I don't post much in here, only the occasional sports shots that I take.
I deffinitely agree that a pic of someone's car in the driveway doesn't belong here. But, a little while ago someone posted some amazing shots of a 350z in motion (not racing, and a little"artsy")... might have been blinking8s, not sure, and THAT, i find absolutely appropriate, as I can't seem to find any better category it would fall under.
Let me ask you this:
is this a sports picture?

**edit: btw, about the thread jacking, I absolutely 100% agree with you. That's plain rude

Well I'll apologize for being on of these offenders. I saw cars under the topic so I figured this would be the place to put them. Its hard for me since I don't let other people drive my firebird or play with my camera. When the transportation section opens I'll be sure to flood it with car show pictures :D

I agree Kenny.

There are some superb sporting images to be seen here - as well as folk seeking feedback and advice on all manner of sports photography. However, at times, the 'true' sports image threads have been getting lost amongst the 'transportation' pics.

Roll on the new forum!

What if you live in the Suburbs or in the country? Then posting parked cars in Urban life would be inappropriate. :p

5 entries found for sport.
sport ( P ) (spôrt, sprt)
n.

1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
2. A particular form of this activity.
3. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively

Based on this we need to see more actions shots of the car being parked lol... We could make "Car Parking" a sport :p

Kawter2, Urban Life refers to items found around the house, typically such as garden implements, pools, grilling etc. I would think that lawn mowers would fit this category also provided they are not the racing type of lawn mowers that when shot at during actual race conditions would be better suited for the sports section. However, a person riding a lawn mower that is actually mowing a lawn, though while yes it is in motion, and carries a slight degree of speed, would still be better fit for the Urban Life section that you spoke of. I would have to argue that a lawn mower, riding of course, should not be put in transportation section as though it does transport a rider around the yard, it is not actually transporting someone to a different location, which I believe is the theme for the transportation section.:D

The bottom line to me when I read the word sports = action. I think some people interpretate that sports = cars. I need to see motion. I need to learn how to shoot action/motion. Anyone can shoot a parked car, I ride a motorcycle and I ride it hard, I don't pose in the parking lot... got it .... I hate posers.

If there is anything to gripe about, it has to be the odd negative comment that pops up in threads about cars.

If you don't like a particular brand of car then keep it to yourself, or go find an automotive forum to share your opinion on.

given my performance last night "anything that moves fast" might mean that photos of me playing hockey would not be eligible.

I'll now tag onto the end of this thread. Looking at the replies I can see which way people want the sports section to go. Not my sort of place I'm afraid, so don't expect to see me making any further posts here until it reverts to a real sports section again.

If you want to keep in touch with my work, look at the sports section of FM.

Kenny I don't see a reason for this last statement. As I read through these last statements, I can tell the majority of the people agree with you, but as of right now it is still up to the judgement of the posters until the change is made. I still don't think a separate transportation section is actually neccessary for I think they bekong in still life. Besides I, as well as many others look forward to your contributions to this forum. You provide a great inspration to those just beginning.

er,...

So you post a thread explaining how you'd like to see the sports section handled/changed.

You get;
1. Two pages of replies agreeing with you.
2. A commitment from the Admin to alter the forum to make this function more to your liking.

... and you decide this is reason to post your leave? http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2hdzu/pics/scratchy.gif

I just don't get it.

Like the sports section on FM is any better?

I was over there today, and there was a thread started by a guy with P&S pictures using 9x analog+digital zoom at a night baseball game, and wondering why the pictures came out so bad. Is that any better than quality shots of non-moving sports cars and bikes being posted here?

This is disappointing. I don't think some people realize that certain types of changes take time to implement. Even more significantly, they can't (or shouldn't) be made without giving a reasonable amount of thought to their consequences so that we don't find ourselves having to do them a second or third time.

Kenny, I love your work and will miss it.

1. Now I know what whining looks like on a message board.
2. This forum has always been open to improvement/changes, but only after serious consideration/discussion by the moderators as to the long term implications of the changes and our ability to implement them and support them. New categories means new forums to police and more posts to move because of those that choose to ignore the categories. Ranting about how the forum isn't the way you like it and how things are better at FM isn't going to win you any points with me. Good bye and good luck!

jeffbmw

Kenny I think just to get up and leave is cop out. I think everyone loves your pictures around here and has a lot to learn from you, but I'm sure no one is going to beg and say please please stay. But I'm sure that's not what your looking as from what I've seen from your post nothing but good comes out of them. I've been viewing the FM for sometime and I always tend to come back here as there is something there that just doesn't do it for me like here. Again to each there own...

I run a spotbike forum and it's gone down hill big time. It's post whores and stupid comments and **** like that which turns people away. Unfortunately that's the internet. Sites are good at time and worse at other times. Also give the moderators the ability to review things and decide, you can't please the world, and sometimes you just need to ignore the small talk if your looking for the good stuff.

Anyways I feel to leave and not give it a chance, seems cheesy. Keep up the good work and stick it out, keep your post coming and I'm sure you will get the right feedback your looking for man....

KennyG,

Not sure what gets stuck in your craw to get you into these moods, but your every 6-8 month goodbye threads are tiring. Not only that, goodbye threads are now against the forum rules and that’s why this one has been shut down.

That being said, everyone, including the entire POTN staff and Admin agrees with you and we are working on resolving this issue and whether you stay or not, it will be resolved.

The logistics of a new forum are not easy. When we split off the Sports and the new Transportation forums, it will be a concerted effort of the entire POTN staff to pull this off. This means that hundreds upon hundreds of threads have to be moved before it’s presented to the public.

The recent shift of EOS Equipment to Lenses and Flash and Lighting was a monumental task that took weeks of planning and several hours to implement. On top of that, there were several more hours of work to clean things up.

So KennyG, have a bit of patience and we’ll get things rolling along. If you decide to leave, then that is your decision alone.

Members: Please stay tuned as we will be making some changes to a few photo sharing forums very soon. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Your input is very valuable to make this forum a fun and informative place to share our passion of the art of photography.
