So I am in San Francisco and I have my G9 as a back up. I took a few shots with it and get the error message "lens retraction error, restart camera" I restart, same thing. The lens will not extend or retract. Is it worth sending in to get fixed? Does anyone have any idea what it might cost to fix?

Thanks

definitely worth fixing...can't be more than $100 - $150 max... maybe less if its is a software issue. But if you don't want to, please send it to me : ) I'll pay shipping. lol..

I will keep that offer in mind. At least now I have options.

Try to jiggle the lens around a bit before you send it in. The 'jiggle' has fixed several G series cameras having stuck lenses.

Right on that idea...and try taking the battery out for at least 10 minutes....then try the restart...worked for me some time ago.....

Same thing happened to a guy at my work to his G9. Seems no matter how gingerly you treat this camera you will eventually get the error. We were able to retract the lens once. But he wound up sending it in for repair. I think Canon was charging close to $200 for the repair, he found another outfit that charged a little over $100.

this is basically what happened to my G3 and it was the end of the camera with only 7,000 shots or so :( Let me tell you, that was a huge disappointment.

Doesn't Canon still have that loyality program?
I kinda remember around $249.00 USD for a recon camera.
At any rate, the G9 is still the best out there....period!

Yeah, they probably do. I ended up giving them another $300 plus the broken G3 and ended up with a refurb'd G6. I'm sure the offer is based upon what they've got available at the time.

Any repair on a G9 is a flat rate of $159 from Canon. I just went through this. If your camera is not repairable but still under warranty, they might send you a reconditioned camera. My G9 was sent back 3 times for the same problem. The third time they sent me a reconditioned G10 which I did not want. I called Canon support, got rerouted to customer service, and was given a return label for the G10. Once they had the G10 back, they sent me a reconditioned G9.

You might be surprised how often they do repairs free. I've had several Canon cameras repaired by them over the years and have yet to pay them a cent. Yet not one was still in its warranty period. Most recent was my 5D in March.

Repair the camera because in today's climate, it'll be money well spent. I'm currently running a pimped up G7 with a GDHK Hack and wouldn't spit on a G10 if it was on fire.

Nor would I (!) but why the extreme antipathy? IMO it's an excellent tool when used within its limitations. I carry mine with me at all times, whereas carrying a DSLR requires a more focussed trip (if you pardon the pun). I've used lots of compacts and it's the best by a country mile.

Only thing I can figure is his G7 is probably less noisy at say ISO 400 or so, I know my A640 is, and I think its the same sensor. But at iso 80 its the best compact I've ever used as well.In fact I just sold this photo sized at 20x24 to the Crab Cooker restaurant and paid for the camera.Something I've always done with my view cameras.
